8/28/02 In their second game of the season, the Bruins traveled to Raymond to face the Raymond-Lincolnwood Knights. The Bruins scored in the top of the 1st inning with Greg Larson driving a big double down the right field line to score Jacob Wear. The Knights quickly evened the score in the bottom of the first. After the 2nd inning, the Bruins were still in the game, trailing only 2-1. The roof fell in on Bruins in the 3rd inning as the Knights hit the ball all over the field and the spark disappeared from the Bruins’ gloves. By the time the 5th inning rolled around, the Bruins found themselves in the dungeon trailing 17-1. But the Bruins did not give up. Tom Newell, who had worked hard behind the plate all day, started a Bruins rally with a single. Wasser, Wear, and Larson kept the rally alive pushing in 3 more Bruins runs. But the Bruins came up short, losing 17-4. Hats off to shortstop Wear who made two superb fielding plays stopping hard hit balls and throwing over to 1st base getting the outs. Wear also grabbed a Knights’ liner out of the air while going 2 for 2 at the plate, and reaching base a third time on a Knights’ error. Hats off to John VonBehren who made the stretches at 1st base on the two Wear throw-overs and a solo put-out in the 4th. Hats off to 2nd baseman Joey Huddleston who caught a Knights’ line drive and pop up. Hats off to pitcher David Wasser who, in the middle of a tough 3rd inning, picked a sleeping Knights runner off 2nd base with a throw back to Wear. Hats off to Newell who recovered on a passed ball, throwing back to pitcher Larson at the plate to nab a Knights runner trying to steal home. Larson also went 2 for 3 with his bat. Trey Dhabalt and Casey Sheehan each reached base with a walk and hit apiece. Next up a double header Saturday at Mt. Pulaski. See you at the field!!
