Baseball News

Playing their first and only preseason practice game on Saturday the 17th, the Bruins beat West Side Christian Elementary School by a score of 8-4.   The Bruins’ four aces (in order of their appearance)--David Wasser, Greg Larson, Jacob Wear and Tom Newell– racked up 17 strike outs in the seven inning game to get the win.

Hats off to Greg Larson for a great catch of a pop-fly in the hole at short to stop a 5th inning CES rally. Hats off to Zach Gardner at 2nd base who stopped a 6th inning hard hit liner straight into his glove by C.E.S.’ big hitter. Although the liner was too hot to hold, Gardner made the force out throw to 2nd base. Hats off also to Tom Newell who not only pitched one inning but worked hard in the heat for five innings behind the plate.

Jacob Wear led the Bruins attack, searing a single down the third base line into the outfield and smashing a double to left center while also pitching 2 innings of scoreless ball.   At his other two at-bats, Wear reached 1st base after being plunked each time by the CES pitchers.   With two outs in the 2nd inning, Gardner and Anton Katalinich drew key walks that allowed them to score after Newell’s hit forced a series of CES throwing errors.  John Von Behren, playing a tough 1st base, had a clutch 3rd inning at-bat knocking in BSS’ 4th run. Casey Sheehan started the BSS 5th inning 3-run rally with a lead off single, coming in to score on Wear’s double. Rounding out the bench was Brooks Fortune whose hard smack in the 6th was unfortunately stopped by the CES fielder.

Pitching the first two innings, Wasser struck out 6 of the 8 batters he faced, stranding 2 CES runners.  Larson closed out the game striking out 3 of the last 4 CES batters to come to the plate as BSS stayed in front from start to finish.

The season is starting so come on out and enjoy Bruins Baseball !!

P.S. Thanks to BSS Alumni A.J. Sheehan and Michael Wasser for umpiring.
