BSS dropped both ends of a doubleheader to St. Al’s, 11-4 and 17-6. The Bruins were plagued with errors in both games, making a combined 17 errors. BSS couldn’t get a rally going in the first game. Leading 1-0 at the end of the 1st inning, St. Al’s took advantage of the Bruins errors to run up a 11-1 lead late in the game. The Bruins ran out of gas and innings. The second game saw the Bruins pull within four runs of St. Al’s going into the last inning, but the Bruins allowed St. Al’s to put 7 unanswered runs on the board in the top of the last inning to seal the Bruins’ fate. There were some highlights. In the first game, lead-off batter Tom Newell, went 2-for-2 at the plate and also reached base on 2 walks. Joey Huddleston went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double. John VonBehren hit a great double to deep center. Coach Wasser (the elder) waved John to third where unfortunately he was nabbed by a perfect St. Al’s relay throw from deep center field. Defensive honors for the first game went to centerfielder Casey Sheehan who made three great catches of well hit fly balls. Huddleston, Jacob Wear and John VonBehren turned a 4-6-3 double play in the 4th. Second baseman Huddleston had two put outs. Catcher Newell made a nice catch of a St. Al’s foul pop a few steps down the 3rd base line. David Wasser, who took the loss, struck out 5 St Al batters, picked off a St. Al runner at 2nd, made a solo ground ball put-out in the 3rd and made a 1-5 put-out in the 6th. In the second game, Newell reached based on 2 of his 4 plate appearances, scoring 2 of the Bruins runs. Sheehan, although, having only 1 hit, had 2 RBI’s and scored a run. Jacob Wear went 3-for-3, with 3 singles and scoring 2 runs. Trey Dhabalt also reached base on both of his two plate appearances, with a single that lead to a run, and a walk. The Web Gem for the second game came in the 1st inning with the Bruins turning a 1(Newell)-2(Dhabalt)-3(VonBehren) bases loaded double play to end the inning. Also of defensive note was Wear’s three 6-3 put outs and a catch of a St. Al’s line drive; Greg Larson’s two 5-3 put-outs; Huddleston’s 4-3 and 4-6 put outs; and Newell’s two 1-3 put-outs. Of course the “3" on the receiving end of each put out was VonBehren who had a busy day at first. Hats also off to Duncan who snagged a St. Al’s fly to left in the 6th inning and Sheehan who snagged a St. Al’s fly to center in the 3rd. Lastly, a hats off to the Bruins players who, on their own initiative, attempted the hidden ball trick. It caught the St. Al’s runner at first base napping. Unfortunately it didn’t count because time had been called and the rules require that the ball must start in play from the mound following a time-out. Nevertheless, give the Bruins an “A+” for thinking creatively !! [As this article is going to press at the same time as the CES game article, see the CES game article for IESA regional and SRD news.]
