The Bruins baseball team took the field at Schlitt on a bee-u-tiful Wednesday evening for their second SRD Fall league game. Bruins pitcher Tom Newell took the mound against Little Flower and pitched a fine complete game, taking the Bruins to a 3-2 victory. Newell struck out 15 LF batters, walked only 1, gave up only 5 hits and scored 2 of the Bruins 3 runs. Needless to say, the game ball went to Tom Newell !!! The Bruins jumped in front in the bottom of the 1st when Greg Larson singled to drive in Newell who had led off the inning with a bunt single and stole his way over to 3rd. Little Flower tied the game in the 2nd. The game went back and forth until the bottom of the 5th when the Bruins put 2 more runs on the board. With one out, Trey Dhabalt and Newell drew walks and stole their way into scoring position. David Wasser hit a hard grounder to second scoring Dhabalt to put the Bruins up by one. Newell advanced to 3rd and then stole home on a passed ball giving the Bruins a 2 run lead. With just two at-bats, Little Flower put a run on the board and had advanced the tying run to 3rd base. Newell then went to work with his battery mate, Trey Dhabalt. Newell struck out the next two batters on 3-2 counts (one looking, one swinging) and then struck out the last LF batter on a 1-2 count. The Bruins had an otherwise tough day striking out 12 times and committing 4 fielding errors. However, once again the Bruins came through with some defensive gems. In the top of the 1st, with two out, LF’s #3 hitter singled to center. LF’s clean up hitter then hit a ball sharply to the left of Bruins shortstop Greg Larsen. Larsen fielded the ball on the bounce with his bare hand (like Ozzie Smith) and stepped on second for a big out #3. Newell then carried the Bruins over the next 3 innings with 9 strikeouts. With the game tied 1 apiece, the Bruins needed to stay tough in the top of the 5th as the game clock was ticking down (we only play 6 innings or 90 minutes) and the top of the LF order was coming to bat. The lead off LF batter ground hard to second. Brooks Fortune kept the ball in front of him, recovered and made the out at first. After swinging through strike 3, LF’s 2nd batter took off for first when the ball got away from Dhabalt. But Dhabalt recovered and made a long throw from the backstop to 1st where John VonBehren dug the ball out the dirt (like Mark Grace) for out #2. LF’s big #3 hitter reached base on a ball drilled through the shortstop’s legs. Advancing to 3rd, the runner represented the go-ahead run for Little Flower. LF’s clean up hitter then looped a ball that looked like it was going into right field over VonBehren’s head. But VonBehren ran back, almost caught the ball–which froze the LF runner momentarily at 3rd–then recovered after falling down and made a great peg to the plate where Dhabalt put the tag on the LF runner trying to score (picture a runner 5 times Trey’s size barreling down to the plate). This sparked the Bruins, who put up 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and held on in the 6th with Newell’s great pitching to win the game. With the win the Bruins are 1 and 1 in the SRD league. Next game is Saturday at 11 a.m. against Christ the King. See you at the game !! |
