Hey !! Hey !! The Bruins win two !! On a beautiful day at Schlitt Park, the BSS Bruins swept a double header from the Mt. Pulaski Bruins, 18-13 and 16-2. Yes, that was a baseball game. Twenty-one runs in a game that lasted 3 hours. Has to be a record! In the opener, Tyler Casper picked up the win, with Tom Newell closing the game out. Casper and Newell each had four strikeouts. In the four inning 2nd game, David Wasser picked up the win, striking out 5, with Grant Bitzer closing out the game. In the 1st game, the BSS Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. Mt. Pulaski put up 6 in the top of the 2nd but the Bruins answered with 3 runs to keep the lead 7-6. Mt. Pulaski then rang up 5 runs to go up 11-7 by the middle of the 3rd. Again the Bruins answered, putting up 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd and 5 more in the 4th to take a 17-11 lead into 5th. By this time both teams were tired as the game was in its 3rd hour. Newell shut Mt. Pulaski down allowing them only 2 runs in the last 3 innings, with the Bruins adding one more in the 6th. The Bruins rang up their 18 runs on 6 hits and 13 walks and a lot of base stealing. Tom Newell again had a great game at the plate, going 3 for 4 and also reaching base a fourth time on an error. In the 2nd game, Mt. Pulaski fielded a young team which allowed the Bruins an easy 16-2 win. The Bruins had 9 hits and 14 walks. Tom Newell had the offensive web gem with a first inning in-the-park home run which also scored Trey Dhabalt. Joey Huddleston had a big triple in the 1st inning to drive in two more runs. Notable defensive web gems in game one were made by shortstop Grant Bitzer on a good cross diamond 6-3 put out; 2nd baseman Joey Huddleston’s catch of hard hit low liner to his feet; catcher David Wasser’s throw down to Bitzer at 2nd to nail a stealing base runner; outfielders Blaine Yates- Frederich and Peter Miller key 1st inning fly ball catches; and 3rd baseman Newell’s stop of a hard grounder forcing out the runner at 3rd. John Von Behren played a solid 1st base in both games participating in 8 outs at his bag and scoring 4 runs. Trey Dhabalt had a fine 2-inning season debut behind the plate in game 1, while drawing 4 walks and scoring 5 runs over the two games. Joining the team, and new to the school was Peter Murphy, who scored two runs in the game 2 win. Next game: Monday August 25 at 4:30 at Schlitt against Jacksonville’s Our Savior’s.
