Game 5 saw the Bruins take a hard 14-4 loss to the Raymond-Lincolnwood Knights.   We were in the game in the beginning trailing only 3-2 going into the 3rd.  The Knights then stormed the castle gates knocking out six hits and racking up nine runs to put the Bruins in the hole 12-2. Despite a fine effort by Tyler Casper pitching in some hot weather, we couldn’t plug the holes. Errors and some balls that just dropped out of our reach made for a tough 3rd inning.   David Wasser came on in relief of Casper to get the last out of the 3rd inning and then pitched out the rest of the game, giving up only 1 hit and 2 unearned runs.   The 8 Bruins errors in the game did not help.   The Bruins were only able to must 5 hits.  Although the Bruins drew 13 walks, we were leaving runners on base.   But for the one tough inning, it was an even ball game.

Hats off to Tom Newell who led the team with two hits. And a big hats off to outfielder Blaine Yates-Frederich, outfielder Danny Schafer and 1st baseman John Von Behren who each had a hard hit single.

The score notwithstanding, the Bruins once again marveled their fans with some defensive web gems. Shortstop Grant Bitzer made a heck of a stop deep in the hole to his right, followed by a great flip backwards to 3rd baseman Wasser for a great out in the 1st inning. The 2nd inning saw catcher Newell make fine catch of a pop up in front of the plate down the 3rd base line and Bitzer make another good stop and cross diamond throw to Von Behren who dug out the ball to end the inning.    It was Bitzer again in the 3rd, charging a ground ball with the bases loaded and throwing to catcher Newell to nail the runner at the plate.  After Wasser replaced Casper in the 3rd, Casper made a solid stop and cross diamond throw to end the inning.

The best web gem of the game came in the top of the 4th. The Knights lead off batter dropped a ball into deep right field. Thinking he had a triple, he started legging it around the infield. Right fielder Schafer ran down the ball, relayed to 2nd baseman Joey Huddleston, who nailed a throw to Bitzer at 3rd, who tagged out the very surprised sliding Knight!!   Score that one 9-4-5 !!

In the 2nd inning, pitcher Casper picked off a Knight runner at 3rd.  The 5th inning saw Wasser add to his pick-off total as he picked off the Knight’s lead-off hitter at 1st base.  The 6th inning saw catcher Trey Dhabalt make a fine throw to 3rd to nail a Knight runner.

Next game: Buffalo Tri-City on Saturday, August 30 at 10 a.m. at Schlitt. See you at the park !!
