In a game that went two and one-half hours, the Bruins notched their 6th win with a 13-5 victory in Jacksonville over a young Our Saviour’s team. Winning pitcher Tyler Casper pitched the first three innings, giving up only 1 hit and 2 runs, and striking out 3. David Wasser came on in middle relief, pitching two innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out 3 (all looking at his curve ball !!). Tom Newell closed out the game in the last inning (we played only 6 because of the setting sun), giving up only 1 hit while striking out 4. Yes, I said striking out 4. (Ask the coach some other time.)
The big bat was again swung by second baseman Joey Huddleston, who had a 1st inning triple and a 3rd inning double. Believe it or not, the Bruins only racked up 3 other hits with singles by Trey Dhabalt, Tyler Casper and John Von Behren. BSS was able to capitalize on stolen bases, passed balls, errors, balks, thrice being hit by pitches (Dhabalt, Huddleston and Danny Schafer), 13 walks and a few real hits to rack up its 13 runs. Huddleston scored 3 of the Bruins’ runs and Dhabalt scored 4 of the Bruins’ runs. The Bruins’ 8 run third inning put the game out of reach. Also hats off to Casey Vondebur, Grant Bitzer, Blaine Yates-Frederich and Peter Murphy, who although not getting hits, each battled full counts into walks, with Vondebur and Murphy scoring in the big 3rd inning.
Again the Bruins defense roses to the occasion. First baseman Von Behren did some great stretching all day long including plucking a high throw out of the air to tag out the OS runner. Second baseman Huddleston put on a 5th inning fielding show, running far out into right field to catch a looping ball for the inning’s first out and again catching a high pop to make the inning’s third out. Starting shortstop Newell was a vacuum cleaner in the hole, with three really fine scoops and cross diamond throws in the 1st and 3rd innings. Rounding out the starting infield, was third baseman Peter Miller, who made three nice 5-3 put outs. After being relieved of pitching responsibilities in the 4th inning, Casper took over at short, making a leaping catch of the lead off batter’s scorching liner. Again in the last inning Casper made a fine 6-3 cross diamond throw to nail the OS runner.
Thanks to the moms for the drinks and refreshments and thanks to Mrs. Miller for taking pictures.
