BSS/SAS
Girls Finish Second
To a Tough Petersburg Porta Team
Petersburg Porta, IL (September 10, 2002)— Porta Girls came in 1,2,3, and
4 with Ashley Thomasma winning with a 13:52 finish. As always, Porta was
outstanding. However, the BSS/SAS girls stopped them there taking 5,6, and 7.
Darian Dolenc held onto a strong lead for the girls posting a time of
15:23 while twin Cross Country runners Olivia and Melissa Gay fought
it out at the finish stride for stride. Melissa posted 15:41 with her
sister Olivia right on her heels posting 15:42. The three girls finished
5th, 6th, and 7th overall.
Porta was the course Kaitlyn White decided to conquer. White has been
holding back all year watching her teammates and many others finish ahead of her
but that ended in Petersburg. She has tasted a fourth place individual team
finish and she likes it. White ran 16:37 at Petersburg and established
herself as a true sectional seven contender. White finished 13th overall.
Kiley Enno (16:49), Anne Cumming (17:04) and Julie McDermott
(17:58) will be rounding out the top seven next week at Lincoln Park. Enno
finished 15th overall. It was a hot and humid afternoon and the 2.02 mile course
at Petersburg proved to be a tough challenge for the BSS/SAS teams. “This is one
of the toughest courses they will run all season,” said Coach Ralph. “We have a
young team with lots of promise.”
Jill Haxel, Abby Vespa, and Emily Meyer came in as a group posting
18:40, 19:04 and 19:29 respectively. Lindsay Dunbar
finished 20:25 while Katherine Drake finished 23:56. There
were five schools and 37 girls competing in Petersburg.
Final Team Points fell as follows: Porta 18, BSS/SAS 46, CTK 78, and Canton 91
Enno
Takes Home Another Win While 6th Grader Bloink
Keeps Striding Forward for the Challenge
And Look who is coming on strong taking three and four in the top seven
Chis Frank and Nick Garcia!!!
Petersburg Porta, IL (September 10, 2002)— Only seven
runners advance to the Sectional meet in October and right now there is a true
race to see who those top seven runners for BSS/SAS will be. Michael Enno
is holding strong to his number one spot running another unchallenged race at
the Petersburg course on Tuesday. Porta’s Dalton Standley gave Enno a bit of a
challenge at the mile mark where Enno posted 6:25 for his first mile but Enno
managed to lose Standley somewhere along the course finishing 13:23 to
Standley’s 13:48 at the finish of the 2.02 mile course.
Gus Bloink (14:11), just a sixth grader at SAS, is making a name for
himself amongst the IESA Cross Country runners. Bloink came through with an
individual third place finish at Petersburg. Bloink along with Enno is a secure
state hopeful. Bloink holds the number two spot on the top seven but third and
fourth were up for grabs at Petersburg. It was Chris Frank (14:18) and
Nick Garcia (14:52) who decided to go for it and go for it they did! Both
boys ran outstanding races and a race that left Assistant Coach Kelly White and
the rest of the coaching staff asking, “Where did that come from?” According to
White, “Both Frank and Garcia were working really hard at practice last week and
they just decided Petersburg was the meet where they were going to establish
their status.” Frank is currently holding the number three spot while Garcia is
holding on to the number four spot amongst the top seven. Frank took an
individual 5th place finish while Garcia took an individual 10th place finish at
Petersburg.
Michael Witsman, Andy Ralph, and Peter McDermott sealed
the five, six and seven spot for the team running stride for stride to the
finish posting 14:55, 14:56, and 15:01 respectively. Witsman,
another promising 6th grader, finished 13th overall while Ralph finished 14th.
McDermott took a 15th place overall finish.
Maroon and Gold were the only colors the score keepers could see as Greg
Larson (15:14), Colin McCormick (15:16), Joey White (15:39), Devin Mapes
(15:47), Trey Dhabalt (15:51), Ben Ahrens (15:54), Ryan Cioti (15:54) and Ryan
Timoney(16:01) all came in right together letting only one CES and one Porta
runner squeeze in between them. “As coaches we love to see that happen,” said
Jacki Ralph. “The more of our kids that come in as a group the higher the point
totals are for those teams we are pushing out.”
Also running in Porta on Tuesday were: Tim Capestrain (16:25), Grant Bitzer
(16:45), Zach Jones(17:37), Zach Boente (17:39) and Danny Lord (18:26).
“This is the largest boys team BSS/SAS has ever seen,” said Coach Ralph. “We are
just hopeful they will stick it out until they reach their full potential. The
high school team would be very happy to acquire such talented male runners.”
Final Team points at Petersburg fell as follows: Porta 28, BSS/SAS 32, CTK 76,
Canton 121, and CES 123 Petersburg is one of two tough teams BSS/SAS comes up
against this season. The next big challenge is Chatham.
