Take Home Icons

An icon is an image or representation, but in the Eastern Church it refers to an image of Christ, the Blessed Virgin, or a saint.  These were usually in the form of flat paintings often protected by a metal covering stamped with the outline of the picture.  This outline was then cut to show the face and hands of the figure.  Icons were venerated in place of statues in the East; but some Catholic churches of Eastern rites now have statues as well as icons.

We would like to share this tradition with our school families.  The God's WISH committee has purchased one icon of a different saint for each classroom.

Each week one child will take the icon home on Friday and return it the following Friday.

The icon and stand will arrive in a packet along with the history of that particular saint and a family prayer.  Each family may choose to venerate their saint as they wish.  Some suggestions might be:

  • To create a holy table to include statues, flowers, pictures of deceased family members, etc.

  • To bring the icon to the family dinner table or take time before bedtime to read the history aloud and take turns reading the prayer.

  • To create family time where each member could share something special about their day.

  • To pray for peace in your family, all Blessed Sacrament families and all families in the world.

On the following Friday morning, mark your child's name off of the attached class list and send the packet to school for the next family to enjoy.  Don't forget to include the stand and history sheet!  If every child is to have their own week, it is very important that the icon be returned on Friday or the last school day of that week, if there is a holiday.

Remember:  The icon coming home with your child has been blessed and is a sacred object.  Please be sure it is handled with respect.

God's WISH is that each member of your family receives warm peace and great joy from your family experience.

"The family that prays together, stays together."  Mother Teresa
