Patrick Boyer a "NEW" miler for B.S.S./S.A.S.
New Berlin, Illinois --April 26, 2001-- Uncertain, unsettled, and borderline
frightened are all adjectives that could be used in a sentence to describe
Patrick Boyers thoughts prior to stepping on the track for the 1600M Run
Thursday night in New Berlin. After the first lap those thoughts still
lingered but as he rounded the curve on the second lap one might say he found
his groove and perhaps a soon to be favorite race for him. Boyer finished
third in the mile with a time of 6:40 fairly impressive for a first timer!
The 7th grade boys as well as the 8th grade boys exude talent but struggle
due to lack of team depth. Teams of four 7th graders and six 8th graders do
not lend themselves to fresh runners at the start of each race. However,
B.S.S/S.A.S still find the courage and ability to outperform the numbers.
For the eighth grade team, Dan Rebbe ran an impressive 400M race for second
with a time of 1:06. Ryan Farris took second in the 200M(:27.19) by :01 of a
second off first. The 4x200 Relay team (Metz Schafer, Squires, Farris) took
second(2:01). Kevin Frank finished second in the 800M(2:37) while Monaghan
finished fourth(2:45). Farris also took third in the 100M Dash with a time of
:13:25. Tom Metz finished fifth in long jump and the 200M(:29.81) Farris and
Frank finished 4th and 5th in the high jump with heights of 4'8".
For the seventh grade boys, Pat Sheehan took second in the 100M with a time
of :14.8 while Matt Cummins ran a :17.22. Matt also finished fifth in the
high jump bowing out at 4'2". Sheehan took third in the long jump with a
leap
of 13'5". Brandon Curry finished fifth in the discus while Jeff Sanders
took
another first. Sanders could be undefeated in the discus for the season thus
far. Matt Cummins posted a time of :34.0 in the 200M and Boyer posted :21.56
in the 110M hurdles.
"I think our eighth grade boys were disheartened with tonight's
results,"
said Coach Ralph "but they ran very well against some very tough
competition.
Both New Berlin and Waverly have some seriously tough sprinters. I was proud
of our boys efforts and I am looking forward to next weeks meets where we
should have a bit more depth to our team!"
Jacki Alexander just Eleven Seconds from State
in the 800M Run
New Berlin, Illinois --April 26, 2001-- She has the leg length. She has the
endurance. She has the ability and she is just 11 seconds off state time in
the 800M Run. Jacki Alexander took first place in the 800M Run Thursday night
with a time of 2:52.68. Having only run this race for the third time, she is
definitely the team's latest state hopeful.
The 7th grade girls took another team victory with 62.5 points over Pawnee
with 57, Waverly 51, and New Berlin 41. Breadth of talent is overwhelming for
this 7th grade girls division. The girls took five-first place honors, four
seconds, two-thirds, three-fourths and five-fifths.
Finishing on or near state times were Hailee Elmore with a 5:33 in the 1600
and a 1:06 in the 400M. The 200M Run and the 4X200M relay are two more state
seeking events for the 7th grade girls. Anna Newell posted a :31.22 in the
200M just 3 sec away and (Pinkham, Metz, Newell, Elmore) posted 2:09.3 in the
4X200 just 8 seconds off state. All of the above were awarded first
for their
efforts.
Katie Jasmon was pulling in individual seconds or helping to pull in a second
all night long at the New Berlin track. She posted 6:23.94 in the mile, 2:59
in the 800M and her relay team consisting of (Manker, Jasmon, O'Marro and
Trott) posted 5:22.69 in the 4X400 receiving seconds all around. Liz Pinkham
secured another second for her performance in the 200M with a time of :31.43
another state potential!!!
Finishing third were Rebecca Schraeder in the 100M(:15.15) and the 4x100M
relay team (McHenry, Magerl, Alexander, Schraeder) with a time of 1:03.97
Shave off 8 seconds there and that relay squad goes to state as well.
Fourth place finishers were McHenry in the high jump at 4"2", Geiger
in the
discus 44'10", and Trott in the long jump 12'1".
In fifth were Pinkham in the long jump 11'8", Geiger in the shot
15'11" Ralph
in the 100Mhurdles(:20.7), Metz in the 100M(:15.5) and O'Marro in the 400M
dash(1:17.82).
The Eight grade girls are nipping at the heals of some state qualifiers as
well. Amy Jones is a want to be posting a 14.53 in the 100M dash :1.4 off
state time and the 4x100 relay (McManus, Fitzgerald, Doerfler, Bulpitt)
wouldn't mind the opportunity posting a 1:04.59 just 9 seconds off state
time. Both received first place honors.
Placing second for the eight grade girls division were Alexander with a 19:10
in the 100M hurdles, Stegeman 6:46 in the 1600M, Jones :32.06 in the 200M,
Stegeman 3:03 in the 800M, and the 4X200M relay team (Magerl, Strayer,
McManus, Bulpitt) with a 2:23.72.
The 4X400M relay team Ashley Jones, Kelly Bramlett, Allie Bloxdorff, and
Emily Schmidt placed third with a time of 5:58.
Fourth place finishers were Amy Jones in the long jump at 12'7.5", Stegeman
in the discus(a first time throw for her) 50'10", Fitzgerald (celebrating
her
birthday) in the high jump 3'10" and Doerfler in the 200M dash with a time
of
:34.5.
Finishing fifth were Doerfler in the high jump at 3'10" and Bramlett in the
400M at 1:15.75. Karen Trott posted a :20.27 in the hurdles.
"State is definitely in the picture for this girls team and we can't
wait,"
said Coach Ralph. " We have only four meets left before sectionals and
anything can happen but without a doubt we will be taking kids to state this
year. They must make their state qualifying time at the Sectional meet on May
12th held at Lanphier Park here in Springfield. We are only allowed two
athletes per event. We have been running a few of our 7th grade girls on the
8th grade team. We will bring them back down to the 7th grade level for
sectionals to allow them their best chance at qualifying."
