Everyone recognizes that Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. I believe this discovery was important to the development of western civilization. However, I admire the characteristics of Columbus’ personality that he demonstrated while struggling to gain acceptance of his ideas and support of his voyage.
The quality I admire most about Christopher Columbus is his perseverance. He was determined to go west to Cathay and did not give up until someone let him do it. He had another quality that I wish I possessed. He took criticism. When people criticized him, he ignored them instead of showing anger.
Columbus displayed a tremendous amount of courage. When people were calling him crazy, it took courage for him to go against what people thought. Also, he was courageous to go someplace where no one had ever been before.
Columbus never lost hope. He knew that someday people would agree with his idea and support him. Columbus had an abundance of confidence. He knew he was right and did not let anyone tell him otherwise.
Another admirable quality of Columbus was his willingness to study. He learned about the earth being round by studying a Greek man named Pythagoroo. Columbus was a Catholic who had a strong faith. His faith was shown by the fact that one of his ships was named Santa Maria, meaning Mary.
Patience is an extremely important quality to possess. I admire Columbus’ great amount of patience. It must have taken immense patience to wait thirty years to get his goal accomplished. He was very grateful. When Queen Isabella decided to finance his voyage, he told her that he would do what they had agreed. He would keep his share of the riches and deliver the remainder to Queen Isabella.
Christopher Columbus stared and era of exploration and colonization. He showed the Europeans new places to live where they could have all the rights they desired. Because of the great strength of Christopher’s character, he was able to accomplish what he first set out to do. He is a good role model for any child who hopes to accomplish something great.
