Each year the third grade class does a study unit on the Rainforest. Grant Bitzer, a fourth grade student, had the opportunity to visit a rainforest when he went with his parents to Puerto Rico. He came back and shared his pictures and this report with the current third grade. Thank you, Grant, for your enthusiasm and willingness to share.
Hello. May name is Grant
Bitzer. I'm in the third grade and
want to tell you facts about the Rainforest in Puerto Rico.
When I went to the Rainforests in Puerto Rico I thought that there would
be a whole bunch of animals like the sloth, anaconda, Hoggs, and monkeys.
But I was wrong because Puerto Rico is an island and for animals to get
to this island they would have to swim or fly.
If the sloths decided to go to Puerto Rico it would take them a long
time.
When I went there I saw a tree that was on the ground, so I decided to go
over to the tree and count the rings and find out how old it was.
When I was next to the tree I saw no rings.
That's because they only have one season there and that is summer and
there is no winter that stops the raining.
In the Rainforest they had the Krowekee frog and a whole bunch of other
frogs. They have more than 20 kinds
of parrots, and over 50 kinds of birds, 5 kinds of lizards and crabs living in
the Rainforest. There are also more
than 10 kinds of fish.
We are used to about 1 ft-2 ft ferns, but in the Rainforest the ferns
were 10 - 15 feet! There are plants
that hang down from trees and some that survive without soil.
There were also berries that grow on palm trees.
In the Rainforest in there is a falls called Coco Falls and a whole lot
of other falls.
The Rainforest in Puerto Rico only needs 80" (6'8") of rain to
qualify to be a Rainforest. They
get over 200 inches of rain (16'10")! I hope you learned some more stuff about the Rainforest.
