Katie Jasmon is Back
and Sixth Grader Melissa Gay is right on her heels!
Petersburg, Illinois -- September 8, 2001 -- The Blessed Sacrament/St.
Agnes Girls Cross Country Team traveled to Petersburg on Saturday
morning bright and early. In a field of 12 teams the girls took third.
Against a tough Petersburg Porta team and more than 60 total runners,
Katie Jasmon took a 9th place team finish with a time of 15:06 and young
Melissa Gay posting 15:19 was right behind her taking a 10th place team
finish.
Jasmon lead the Petersburg pack for the first 400yds. Katie has been
suffering from chronic shin splints and has been out of practice for
several weeks leaving the door open for 6th grader Melissa Gay to edge
her way in. Gay running only the second CC race of her life shows
serious potential.
Gay was not the only 6th grader making huge strides on Saturday. Kylie
Enno posting 17:17 and Katlyn White posting 17:18 along with Olivia Gay
with 17:47 and Anne Cumming with a 18:01 shaved a minute plus off their
times from last weeks meet.
"Our girl's team is larger in numbers than most other girl's teams
we compete against. This puts us at a distinct advantage on the
course," said Coach Ralph. "Having the ability to pull talent
from our sixth graders is not only gainful but very promising for the
future of this young team."
Other team finishers Saturday were: Ashley Ralph 12th, Ashley Jones
21st, Allie Bloxdorf 22nd, Darian Dolenc 24th, and Rebecca Schraeder
27th. Emily Schmidt bravely gave up her spot on the top seven due to an
injury and Katie Korza posted another consistent 17:27.
Top Five Team Scores fell as follows: Petersburg Porta 23, Rochester 51,
BSS/St. Agnes 74, IC 108, Beardstown 134.
Hugh McDermott Takes Home a Medal
But Check Out Michael Enno and Colin McCormick!
Petersburg, Illinois -- September 8, 2001 --- The Blessed
Sacrament/St. Agnes Boy's Team was up against some stiff
competition at the Petersburg CC Invitational on Saturday.
Whispers heard on the start line sounded something like,
"Are you sure those kids are all in Junior High?"
Such conversation was not the least bit intimidating to Hugh
McDermott a seventh grader who took a team tenth place finish
posting a consistent time of 13:22. Hugh medalled at the
Invitational Meet and the team took fifth in a field of twelve
with three of their original top seven team members not present.
With more than seventy-five runners at the starting line BSS/St.
Agnes ran a great race but probably the most remarkable were the
finishes of Michael Enno and Colin McCormick. "I knew you
had it in you Enno," was the comment heard from Coach Ralph
as Michael Enno crossed the finish line. Colin McCormick ran a
strong race with a beautiful kick at the end posting 15:09.
"We think it is called 'lumping' and that is what helped
the BSS/St.Agnes team secure its fifth place finish," said
Coach Ralph. "Placing McCormick 29th, Enno 30th,
Dhabalt 31st, and Ahrens 32nd in team finishes was desirable.
When a team places their runners one right after the other, it
enables that team to edge out the competition by pushing the
other teams placements to a higher mark. "
Devin Mapes placed 34th and Andy Ralph placed 37th in team
finishes while Max Guiliford posted a 16:35 and Danny Lord
posted 17:11. The grass course proved a tougher running road for
the BSS/St.Agnes team but not one it can't adjust to.
The top five team points fell as follows: Petersburg Porta 25,
I.C. 27, Rochester 46, Springfield Christian 87, BSS/St. Agnes
132 and Liberty 154.
