23RD ANNUAL FRANKLIN JR. HIGH
CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
September 26, 2001
"Finally
Franklin"
Springfield, Illinois – September 15, 2001, The Cross Country Stars of Blessed
Sacrament/St. Agnes co-op team traveled to the middle of no where, I mean, the
Franklin Outing Club, a private residential club, for the 23rd Annual Franklin
Invitational in early September. It was the 23rd year and there were 23 teams
with more than 400 athletes ready to run. Results of this race are finally in!
As is par, with the exception of two runners from Mount Zion, Glenwood dominated
the course. Mount Zion's, Blaise Carie and Josh Wakman, set new course record
times for the #1 and #2 man race. They posted times of 10:47 and 11:23
respectively. Team winner for both boys and girls divisions was Glenwood.
Glenwood has taken the Invitational title fifteen out of twenty-three years; a
mighty impressive record. New course record holders this year for Glenwood were:
Ryan South(11:14), Jeron Stretch(12:08), Justin Walker(12:07) and Staci
Nelson(12:47), Ruth Seitz(13:06), Barb Bilko (13:36).
The BSS/St. Agnes teams were up against what was said to be," the toughest
and slowest two mile course they will run all year." The boys team finished
16th and the girls team finished 14th overall, not bad for a team still in its
infancy.
Hugh McDermott placed 14th in the 1st man race with a time of 13:12. Nick Feller
placed 16th in the 2nd man race posting 13:48. Michael Enno placed 17th in the
3rd man race posting 14:11. Michael Feller placed 17th in the 4th man race
running 15:04. Trey Dhabalt placed 16th in the 5th man race posting a very
impressive 14:47. Devin Mapes placed 14th in the 6th man race running his
personal best of 14:53. Peter McDermott place 16th in the 7th man race posting a
time of 15:54. P. McDermott, M. Feller and Trey Dhabalt are all 6th graders.
Running in the open race were: Andy Ralph, Max Guiliford and Danny Lord.
The girls team was without two of their favored runners due to a Softball
Regional tournament. Because of this, all runners were bumped up to a tougher
position on the team. Intimidation seemed to be the key phobia shadowing this
race. Ashley Ralph ran in the 1st man race posting a course time of 15:31 for
18th place. Girl wonder, Melissa Gay, a sixth grader, ran in the 2nd man race
posting her personal best of 14:47 for 13th place. Ashley Jones placed
16th in the 3rd man race running 15:48. Darian Dolenc ran 15:21 in the 4th man
race for 13th place. Emily Schmidt made an awesome comeback, having been plagued
by an injury. She placed 7th in the 5th man race with a time of 15:46. Not her
best, but she is on the mend. Running in the open were: Kiley Enno(15:47),
Kaitlyn White(15:48), Anne Cummings(16:13) and Olivia Gay(16:25). D.Dolenc, M.
Gay,K. Enno, K. White, A. Cummings, and O. Gay are all sixth graders.
"We don't place an emphasis on team points or team placements when we
run," said coach Ralph. "It is more about going out there and running
your personal best each and every time. If they do that, then they always
win!"
The BSS/St.Agnes teams will run their sectional meet in Monticello Washington on
October 6,2001. Competing in the sectional meet are: Bloomington Holy Trinity,
Clinton, Decatur Johns Hill, Downs Tri-Valley, Monticello Washington, Rochester,
Shelbyville Moulton, Springfield CTK, Springfield Christian, Springfield
Lincoln, and Tolono Unity. Chances of sending someone to state are still very
very promising!
