How Important are Spikes
Decatur, Illinois – April 2002-- Rumor has it that there were some
directional difficulties getting a certain group of 8th grade girls to the
Decatur meet on time. Apparently having time to get your spikes on before that
first 100M hurdle race wasn't really that important for Karen Trott. Trott
making it to the starting line just under the wire placed first in the 100M
hurdles with a time of :18.41 while Ashley Ralph another late arrival placed
third(:20.29).
That was the opener for another BSS/SAS 8th grade girls domination on the track
at Our Lady of Lourdes. There were 7 out of a possible 13 first place finishes,
three seconds and six thirds.
Hailee Elmore finished first in the 1600M(5:25) and the 400M(1:03.44) a personal
best for this year's season. Elmore finished second as the anchor on the 4x100M
relay team (:59.71).
Katie Jasmon finished first as a member of the 4x400M relay team (5:08.64)
and first as individual in the 800M(2:42) a personal best for this year.
Jasmon also took second in the 1600M with another personal best for this season
of 5:57. Emily Schmidt placed fifth in the 1600M with a time of 6:57 and was
also a member of that first place 4x400M relay team.
Additional members of the 4x400M relay team were Karen Trott and Maureen O'Marro.
O'Marro placed third in the 400M(1:10.87), fourth in the H.J.(4' 0") and
fifth in the L.J. (11'4"). Trott placed 1st in the long
jump.(12'8")
Anna Newell the anchor on the 4x200M relay team(2:10.75) took a first in that
event along with Kim Magerl and two sixth graders Darian Dlonec and Ashley Eck.
Newell finished second in the 200M dash(:30.55). Mageral also placed 5th in the
H.J.(3'8") and 6th in the 200M(:32.07).
Rebecca Schraeder made her presence known by placing third in the 100M (:14.38)
and fourth in the 200M(:31.46). Schraeder was also a member of the second place
4x100M relay team. Final members of that sub 1:00 4x100M relay team were Ashley
Jones and Ashley Ralph. Jones also placed 3rd in the 800 (2:44) while
Ralph placed 5th(2:55).
Emily McHenry placed third in the H.J.(4'4") a personal best for this
season and fourth in the 100M (:14.65).
The Eighth Grade Boys team was all of four members strong but still managed to
put a fourth place finishing relay team together. Patrick Boyer, Matt Cummins,
Michael Timoney and Nick Langillier a seventh grader ran the 4x200M relay in
2:09.
Boyer finished third in the 110M hurdles(:20.75) while Brandon Curry finished
second in the discus throw(81'10") and sixth in the shot put (28' 7
1/4"). Matt Cummins placed sixth in the H.J. (4'6").
Almost
Perfect....
Decatur, Illinois – April 2002-- The BSS/SAS Seventh Grade Girls placed
first and second in almost every event they entered at Our Lady of Lourdes last
weekend. Bridget Helms ran a state qualifying 100M time of :13.38 in the prelims
and came back to own first place in the 100M finals with a time of :13.54.
But, that wasn't enough for Helms. She needed more! She wanted more so she took
first in the 200M with a final time of :29.92 and her 4x100M relay team also
finished first with a time of 1:00:85.
Helms was not the only shining star in Decatur. Breanne Seargent took first in
the 100M hurdles(:18.5), first in the L.J.(11' 9") and second in the
200M(:30.65). Seargent was also a member of that first place 4x100M team.
Oh but it doesn't even stop there. Christine Becker wanted a piece of the action
too. Becker took second in the 100M finals(:14.49), second in the
H.J.(4'0"), fourth in the 200M(:32.82) and was a member of the first place
4x100M team. Anne Bloechle was the final member of that 4x100M team.
Bloechle also took second in the shot put(22' 2 1/2") and second in the
discus throw(58" 8 3/4"). Jessica Selvaggio took third in the shot(16'
3 1/2") and fifth in the discus(54' 11 3/4") adding additional points
to the BSS/SAS 7th grade team score.
Last but not least, in come those sixth graders again making up a 4x400M team (M
Gay, White, Cumming, Enno) which also finished second (5:39.94). Seems like
first and second were the trophies of choice for this group of seventh/sixth
graders.
As for the Seventh Grade Boys team, they too were fairly fond of firsts and
seconds! Nick Langellier, in his best form took another first on the 110M
hurdles(:19.59) followed by Kevin Klemm(:21.39) in second place. Langellier also
took second in the 400M(1:09.96) while Klemm finished third in the L.J. (11' 6
1/2").
Michael Stieren blew the rest of the field away in the 200M finals finishing 3
full seconds ahead of the next closest man. Stieren's time :27.79 just tenths
off state qualifying time again!
Ben Ahrens ran a great 1600M time of 6:29 for sixth place and finished fifth in
the 800M(3:01) followed closely by Devin Mapes who took sixth in the 800M(3:08).
Ahrens also placed third in the H.J.(4'1") Chris Behl took fifth in both
the shot(20' 10") and the discus throw(52' 2 1/4").
Mapes, Ahrens, Klemm and Stieren ran an impressive sub 5:00 4x400M relay that
was held up against 8th graders placing them third. Their time 4:58.69
Competition at a Sixth Grade Level
Decatur, Illinois – April 2002-- Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh FINALLY a chance to
compete at their own level. The BSS/SAS super star sixth graders traveled to
Decatur last weekend to compete at the annual Our Lady of Lourdes Invitational.
This meet, expected to host more than 400 runners, came up a bit shy of expected
entrants but provided a platform for the BSS/SAS kids to shine.
Tommy Lord had an impressive leap at the long jump, jumping 12' 8" awarding
him a first place finish. Lord also took third in the H.J. (3'10") and
fourth in the 100M (15:54) Bryce Yoho proved the 400M is his favorite event
running 1:20 for second place. Val Contri, in his usual excellent form, ran
:32.21 in the 200M placing third. Contri was quickly followed by Ben
Cummins(:32.68), Jeff Painter(:34.50) and Phil Sherman(:34.55). Cummins also
place third in the L.J. jumping 12" 5 1/2".
Most notable was the 4x100 relay team with a time of 1:03.87, placing second,
just edged out by LSA. Running on that relay team were: Painter, Cummins,
Sherman and Contri.
And how about those Sixth Grade Girls??? Well, apparently Melissa Gay was a
little more comfortable on the OLOL track than at Elkhart..... M. Gay placed
first in the 1600 with a most impressive time of 6:39, and first in the
800M(3:02). Ashley Eck was out in front of the crowd as well placing first in
the 200M (:32.22) and second in the 100M(:15.06).
Molly Bramlett added team points by placing third in the 100M(:15.20) while Lisa
Miller added points with a sixth place finish in the 100M(:16.15). Miller also
placed 5th in the 400M(1:21).
Anne Cummings place 4th in the 400M with a time of 1:19. Cumming is working on
state time in the 400M. Darian Dolenc, another state hopeful, placed third in
the 800M with a time of 3:05. Kaitlyn White placed third in the 1600M with a
time of 7:12 and Kiley Enno placed 6th in the 200M(:35.12) and fourth in the L.J.(10'9").
Bramlet jumped 10' 3" giving her a fifth place finish in the long jump as
well.
Results for the 4x100 relay team Olivia Gay, Stephanie Hickman, Lisa Miller and
Molly Bramlet were not posted officially but their time was 1:08.11. See results
of the 4x400M relay team on the seventh grade press release.
