Too Shy Shy
Virden,
Illinois – April 2002-- The BSS/SAS 7th grade boys track team was
just a few too many runners shy for a complete victory at the Virden Triangular;
missing a win by just 3 points!!
Hey St. Agnes!!! Whose idea was it to have a spring choral concert the same day
as a track meet anyhow? I am sure those missing runners had first rate voices
nonetheless. Point spread went as follows: Virden 34, BSS/SAS 44 and Waverly 47!
The Eighth grade team anchored by the big guy, Jeff Sanders, did beat Waverly by
four points but, they just don't have the depth in numbers to field a full team.
Sanders, however, is a lock for state in the shot and the discus. He is
not only consistently throwing state distance in both events but is consistently
challenging his own school record throwing 43' 5" in the shot and 127' 2
1/2" in the discus. Brandon Curry took third in both shot (31")
and discus (78'3") while Chris Foster took fourth in the shot (27'3").
Patrick Boyer received a fourth place finish for his effort in the 110M hurdles
and second in the 200M. Boyer and some crazed 7th grade boys and one 6th grader
threw together a 4x200M team and a 4x100M team at the last minute. They took
second in the 4x200M and first in the 4x100M. I believe Sam Gallon, Nick
Langellier, Trey Dhabalt and Michael Enno were amongst the crazed few looking
for anything to fill their extra time. And, did I mention Enno is running that
relay with a broken arm; an interesting hand off indeed. Grant Endris placed
fourth in the 100M. Now back to that Seventh Grade team....
None of our prized sixth graders were at the Virden triangular. They were
testing their vocal muscles instead of their leg strength on Tuesday. They were
sorely missed. Due to this significant loss we scratched the 4x200 and the 4x400
relay events. David Kavish, Michael Stieren, Nick Langillier and Kevin
Klemm however, put together a screaming fast 4x100M relay team and took first
place(:58.5); just 5.5 seconds off state qualifying time.
Stieren wasn't satisfied with just one first so he took first in the 100M(:13.9)
and the 200M(:28.1) as well before he packed it in. He also took second in the
long jump(12' 9 1/2").
Langillier was just barely beaten in the 110M hurdles(:18.81) by a Waverly
runner(:18.5) giving him second in the 110M hurdles. Langillier also took second
in the 800M(2:56.5). Kevin Klemm took third in the hurdles(:21.82).
Michael Enno broken arm and all still managed a first place finish in the
1600M(6:52) and a third in the 800M(3:02). Are you sure his doctor is ok with
this? The cast will take some getting use to but Enno expects to be back in rare
form soon! Ben Ahrens finished third in the 1600M(7:02).
Sam Gallon was the "new" shining star at the Virden meet running a
brutal 400M in 1:17 for first place. Trey Dhabalt our only 6th grade
representative took fourth in the 400M (1:22.8). David Kavish, on the other
hand, was happy to get out of running a 400M in the 4x400 at Virden and added
his team points by taking second in both the 100M(:14.1) and the 200M(:28.9).
Thank those choral directors Kavish because it isn't going to happen again :o)
Chris Behl added the final team points throwing the shot 20'11" for fourth.
Rumor has it...... Mr. Stieren was happy to go home just a little earlier than
usual this time. So, he too is thankful to those missing team members.
Next up......................... New Berlin, Thursday April 25, 2002!
7th
and 8th Grade Girls Track Team
Unstoppable in Virden
Virden, Illinois – April 2002-- Both the BSS/SAS 7th and 8th grade girls
track teams won the Virden triangular against Virden and Waverly 55-47W-32V
(7th grade) and 67.5-44.5V-22W (8th grade). Mighty impressive effort
indeed on behalf of the 7th grade team considering, the 7th grade girls team is
made up of only five 7th grade girls and the rest are sixth graders! As for the
8th grade girls, experience and talent play a huge role.
Seventh grade team members,Breanne Sergeant, Bridgett Helms, Kiley Enno,
Christine Becker, Anne Bloechle, Jaclyn Tracey, Erin Hanney, Lisa Miller and
Erin Malone were all contributors to first place points on Tuesday.
Has Breanne Sergeant been beaten this season in the 100M hurdles? I don't think
so. Sergeant finished first again with a time of :18.82. Sergeant still looking
for that state time of :17.6!
Helms took her usual first in the 100M dash(:13.75) and not too far behind was
Christine Becker who took second(:14.72). Kiley Enno fought to the finish for
first in the 1600M(7:06) while Melissa Gay took third(7:14) and Kaitlyn White
took fourth(8:04).
The 4x100M relay team is just on the brink of state time in their event;
finishing first again Becker, Sergeant, Helms and Bloehle.
Two, three, and four were the finishing places in the 400M for BSS/SAS seventh
grade teammates Anne Cumming(1:23), Jessica Selvaggio(1:24.7) and Olivia
Gay(1:24.8).
Helms was just barely edged out by a Waverly runner at the very end of the 200M.
By one-tenth of a point, Helms finished second in that event with a time of
:28.72. State time is :28.4.
Kiley Enno and Darian Dolenc finished third and fourth in the 800M with times of
3:16 and 3:17 respectively.
The 7th grade 4x200M relay made up entirely of 6th grade girls took another
first. Jaclyn Tracey, Erin Hanney, Lisa Miller and Erin Malone ran it in 2:19.
Selvaggio took second in the discus throw with a toss of 56'6 1/2". Breanne
Sergeant jumped 12"11" in the long jump for second and Christine
Becker jumped 3'11" in the high jump for third.
The Eighth grade girls team rocked as usual taking 8 first place finishes out of
a possible 13. Emily McHenry took two of those in the high jump(4'3") and
the 100M dash(:14.47). Hailee Elmore took her usual three in the 1600M (5:55),
400M(1:03) and as the anchor on the 4x200M relay(2:12). Anna Newell took three
firsts as well in the 200M(:29:06), as the lead on the 4x200M relay team and
anchor on the 4x400M relay team(5:03), which by the way is run directly after
the 4x200M relay in the order of events.
Katie Jasmon isn't going to give up a first place finish in the 800M(2:51.7)
this year either. So far, she owns that event. Jasmon took another first as a
member of the 4x400M relay team. Additional first place finishers and members of
the 4x200M relay team Rebecca Schraeder and Emily Magerl and additional members
of the 4x400M relay team Ashley Jones and Karen Trott.
Trott took second in the hurdles and set a new school record with a time of
:17.71; a personal best for this season for Trott who is trying desperately to
make state time. Ashley Ralph took third in that event as well and ran a very
impressive 2:59 in the 800M as well.
Magerl tied for third in the 100M(:15.03) and took third in the H.J.(4'1").
Emily Schmidt was #3 of the 1,2,3, finish BSS/SAS 8th grade girls had in the
1600M(7:16) while Jones took fourth in both the 400M(1:19) and the 800M(3:09).
The 4x100M relay team (Trott, McHenry, Katie Korza and Schraeder) added second
place points to the point total running 1:01.4 in that event, just 6 seconds off
state time. Korza also finished third in the 200M(:31.63).
Finishing up field events, Grace Geiger threw the discus 53'2 1/2" for
fourth and Trott finished second in the long jump(12'8").
