BSS/SAS Track Stars
Were Breaking School Records While Challenging State Times
at The Auburn Triangular
Springfield, Illinois - March 2003 "This meet is just a glorified practice
session," BSS/SAS coach Jacki Ralph told her athletes at the season opener.
"Think of it as just a different track for us to hold practice on," she said.
There are three basic rules the BSS/SAS Track & Field team is required to
follow: come on time, be kind and come to train. At the Auburn Triangular on
Thursday afternoon, they were mostly on time …… according to the meet starter, "
They were more than kind," and from the results of their performances… they did
the workout that was required of them!
Seven School Records were broken at the first meet of the season. Unbelievable!
Two 8th grade girls are already running state times and many other runners as
well as jumpers and throwers are promising state hopefuls.
Breanne Sergent broke both the long jump(14'11") and the 100M Hurdle school
record for the 8th grade girls. She shattered the 100M hurdle state time of 17:1
by running :16.9. Both Hugh McDermott(5:39) and Jacob Wear(5:44) broke the 1600M
school record for the 8th grade boys while their 4x400M relay team ran 4:26
crushing last year's school record of 4:45. Bridget Helms gave the 400M a try
for her first time and beat the state time by 2 full seconds running 1:03 just
two seconds off alumni Hailee Elmore's state champion and school record time of
1:01.
Seventh Grader Tommy Lord broke the school record in the high jump, jumping 4'
5" while Chris Frank strolled to a first place finish in the 1600M. Seventh
grader Frank blasted the school record of 6:00 by finishing in 5:36!
State hopefuls on the BSS/SAS team were abundant in Auburn. Chandler
Wescott(8thgrade) ran the 200M in :26.2 just a bit over one second from making
state time. Jeff Painter(7th grade) was just one second off state time in the
100M(:13.05). Christine Becker (8th grade) also, just one second off state time
in the 100M(:14.01). Moly Bramlett(7th grade) was just a half a second off state
time in the 100M(:13.9).
Three relay teams were within 4-5 seconds of making state times: 4x200M relay
(7th G) Erin Malone, Erin Hanney, Ashley Eck, Jessica Orlando,; 4x100M relay
(8th G) Becker, Melissa Gay, Hanney, Bramlett,; 4x200M relay (8th G) Becker,
Bramlet, Sergent, and Helms.
The BSS/SAS track and field team has one goal in mind while out on the track…
getting as many teammates to state as possible. The focus is not on who placed
where or who beat whom but the answer to that burning, "Did I run my personal
best today?" Now, they have their starting points and a trip to state in mid-May
looks very promising. Overall, this first meet/glorified practice session was a
tremendous success.
