One Time 4x400M Relay Team
Blows State Time Away at Clinton Quad
(Eck, Sergent, Helms, Hanney) [4:25.75]
Springfield, Illinois - May 2003 For three years now the BSS/SAS track team
has traveled the fifty-minute trek to Clinton for a face-off with Clinton, St.
Mathews and Decatur Lutheran. Usually, they are greeted with gusting winds and
tough, tough competitors. Well, this year the competitors held up their end but
the winds were actually calm making the backstretch on the track a little more
bearable though some may beg to differ.
With the help of some stand out 7th grade girls, the 8th grade girls' team was
able to pull off the only first place team victory for the BSS/SAS tracksters.
Sweeping 9 of 13 events and taking first place honors were Breanne Sergent in
the 100M hurdles(:16.6), Darian Dolenc(7th) in the 1600M run(6:14), Jessica
Selvaggio in the 400M dash(1:12.83), Kiley Enno(7th) in the 800M run(2:54.38),
Breanne Sergent in the Long Jump(13'10.5"), Christine Becker in the high
jump(4'5"), Anne Bloechle in the discus(84'4") and both the 4x200M (Craighead,
Orlando, Bramlet, Malone)[2:05.38] and 4x400M(Eck, Sergent, Helms, Hanney)[4:25.75]
relay teams. In fact, the 4x400M relay team, shattered state qualifying time in
that event(4:31.5). Unfortunately all of those girls are already running in the
4x200M at the Sectional meet and the 4x400M directly follows the 4x200M relay
event. However, BSS/SAS is hopeful all will attend state as individuals in the
400M open. Likewise Anne Bloeche broke open a new school record in the discus
with her 84 foot 4 inch throw! The BSS/SAS 8th grade girls scored a total of 77
points against St. Mathew 52, Clinton's 45 and Decatur Lutheran's 22.
The 7th grade girls' team could have used some help from those stand out 7th
graders the 8th grade girls were borrowing. Taking only three first place
finishes, two from Jessica Orlando and one from Molly Bramlet, the 7th grade
girls spread their points out evenly with seconds, thirds in fourths to gather
62 points against Clintons 80 points putting BSS/SAS in second place overall.
Orlando ran :28.94 in the open 200M dash and jumped 13'10.75" in the long jump.
Bramlet ran :13.6 in the 100M dash.
Chris Frank gave the 1600M one more try before making a decision on what to run
at Sectionals. He placed first again by a large margin but still not at state
time. He took first with a time of 5:31.51. The 4x200M relay team followed with
the only other first place position in a time of 2:02. Running were Painter,
Contri, Frank and Dhabalt. The 7th grade boys scored 39 points putting them in
third behind St. Mathews with 52 and Clinton with 82. Sixth grader Michael
Witsman had another stand out performance in the 1600M running consistently at
6:09. Another sixth grader to watch is Steven Begando who ran the fourth leg of
the 4x400M(Begando, Ralph, McDermot, Boente) in a split time of 1:07 to pull his
team from last to second place.
This time it was the sprinters who were leading the 8th grade boys' team,
Chandler Wescott in the 100M and Michael Enno in the 200M. Both athletes took
first in times of :12.94 and :26.07 respectively. Ryan Ciotti took second place
in the 110M hurdles and Jacob Wear ran another great 1600M time of 5:29.9. Colin
McCormick is consistently keeping his 400M time at sub 1:00 preparing for
Sectionals. The 8th grade boys team scored 43 total team points taking third
behind Clinton's 58 and St. Mathew's 78.
