It was a Happy May Day
for the BSS/SAS Tracksters
At the New Berlin Quadrangular

Springfield, Illinois - May 2003   Chris Frank blazed through all four laps in the 1600 cutting another 10 seconds off his time putting up a 5:26. Just
10 more seconds and that young man is a state qualifier too! "Wow!" is what co-captain Bridgett Helms said when 7th grader Ashley Eck blew past her in the 4x200M relay on the final leg. Two bad hand-offs for the 8th grade team(Helms, Sergent, Bramlet, Craighead) and four great hand-offs for the 7th grade team along with four outstanding 200M runs allowed Eck, Hanney, Malone and Orlando to not only run 7th grade state qualifying time(2:01) but 8th grade state qualifying time as well putting up a 1:57.00 at the finish line.  The 8th grade team ran 1:59.3, a perfect match for pushing each other at practices!

Another push comes to shove with not one but two 1:02 times in the 400M with Breanne Sergent at 1:02.91 and Bridget Helms at 1:02.90, almost too close to call. State time for the 8th grade girls in the 400M is 1:05. Sergent, working on her three steps in the hurdles remains undefeated for the season putting up :16.46. Christine Becker tied the school high jump record for the 8th grade girls jumping 4'6".  Anne Bloechle(discus) and Katie Kucher(shot) both set new school records for the BSS/SAS throwing team. Rachel Craighead broke her own school record again in the 200M running :28.85. Emily Meyer also put up some personal records in the 100M(:13.98) and the 200M(:29.69).

Jacob Wear another 8th grader just a few seconds shy of a state spot in the 1600M improved his personal best in the 1600M by almost 20 seconds and raised the bar on that event setting a new school record of 5:29. If he can do that one more time at the sectional meet he will definitely find himself in a state seat. Michael Enno is still barely off state time in the 200M(:26.62) and he put up an impressive 1600M(5:35) time as well. Colin McCormick is seeking a spot in the open 400M race and resetting the school record in that event. New spikes in toe he put up his best time of 1:01 in the 400M run.   Chandler Wescott was grinning ear to ear when he put up a :12.82 in the 100M.  He is holding tight to his 200M spot as well (:27.07). The question is, which one will he make it to state in? Perhaps both?

Michael Witsman, another trailblazer, ran beautifully in the 1600M posting 6:02 for a personal best. Not too shabby for a sixth grader! Jeff Painter
still biting at the bit to make state times in the 100M and 200M posting :13.1 and :29.34 respectively. Overall, it's Chris Frank who deserves all the
glory on the 7th grade boys' team. Frank ran his best ever time in the 1600M(5:26) and went from that event to the 800M putting up another personal
best of 2:34. Without a moments pause, Frank jumped into the 4x200M relay team( Dhabalt, Ralph, Frank, Contri) and pulled them from third place to first. Frank handed off to Val Contri who brought it home with plenty of room to spare (2:08).

Darian Dolenc(2:45) and Melissa Gay(2:47) ran stride for stride in the 800M for the 7th grade girls teams. Both girls are pushing each other forward to secure their state spot in that event. Young and wicked fast 6th grader Danielle Ketchum put up another personal best in the 100M(14.14). We will be seeing a lot from her in the years to come!  The 4x400M relay team of Jaclyn Tracy, Dolenc, M. Gay and Anne Cumming took control of that school record running 4:56. Ashley Eck the clinch runner on the 4x200M relay team also ran state qualifying time in the 400M run posting 1:05.5. Jessica Orlando another runner on that 4x200M team is pushing hard to get state time in the 200M running :28.75. Kiley Enno and Olivia Gay both put up personal bests and great efforts in the 1600M with 6:22 and 6:37 respectively.

All in all there were very few runners, jumpers and throwers on the BSS/SAS track team that didn't put up a personal best in New Berlin. Could it be all those shiny new spikes or just raw TALENT??? It was a great meet for them going into the big Petersburg Invite on Saturday. Good Luck to the team. Your coaches appreciate your awesome performances…. Coach JR :o)
