Petersburg Porta Invitational
where the sun was warm but the competition was red hot!

Springfield, Illinois - May 2003   When a sub 1:00, 400M-dash time is only good enough for a fifth place individual finish, you know the competition is
tough! Powerful and strong was the competition at the 15-team Invitational in Petersburg on Saturday, May 3, 2003. The weather was ideal but the day grew quite long when the meet began at 9:00 a.m and finished sometime after 4:00p.m. State times were flying all around from many of the schools there.  Petersburg Porta, Athens and Pleasant Plaines are all in the BSS/SAS  Sectionals. This is how they compared in team scores:

7th grade girls: Porta 45, SAS 31, Plaines 22, Athens 2
8th grade girls: Porta 62, SAS 59, Plaines 33, Athens 0
7th grade boys: SAS 20, Porta 20, Plaines 12, Athens 0
8th grade boys: Plaines 46, Porta 22, SAS 13, Athens 13

The only gold taken home by the BSS/SAS track team came from 8th grade girls Bridgett Helms in both the 400M(1:02.63) and the 100M(: 13.38) dashes, Breanne Sergent in the 100M hurdles (: 16.57) and the 4x200M relay team (1:57.84) of Molly Bramlet, Bridgett Helms, Rachael Craighead and Breanne Sergent. Helms took second in the long jump with 14 feet 7.5 inches and Sergent and Craighead took third in the 400M(1:04.85) and 200M(: 29.85) respectively. Jenna Reid, plagued with a hip injury, fell to fourth in the 1600M(6:02) and did not compete in the 800M. She is healing now for sectionals.

The seventh grade girls 4x200M relay team (Ashley Eck, Erin Hanney, Erin Malone, Jessica Orlando) took second in that event to Rochester putting up 2:04.77. And, Erin Malone tied a school record jumping her personal best in high jump with a leap of 4'6" for second place. Darien Dolenc (2:41.73) and Melissa Gay(2:44.32) ran tough 800M runs for fourth and fifth place while Kiley Enno faired well in the 1600M(6:15) placing fifth. Mallory Davlin made it out of the 100M hurdle prelims to place 6th in the finals(:19.71).

Chris Frank still giving it his all in the 1600M shooting for that state time came in right behind Thompson from Rochester, his only competition so far
this year. Frank posted 5:28 behind Thompson's 5:24.91. Thompson drafted Frank the entire race and took him only on the final stretch. Frank placed second in the mile and third in the 800M(2:30.28).  The only other 7th grade boys team point takers were Jeff Painter running fifth in the 200M(:29.08) and a fourth place finish by the 4x200M relay team (Frank, Painter, Ralph & Dhabalt) a team we will see again at Sectionals.

Jacob Wear put up a solid performance in the 1600M run placing second with his best time of 5:21.45.  It was a very impressive performance by Wear as well as Colin McCormick who placed fourth in the 1600M run with a time of  5:44.53. But the 1600M was just a warm up for McCormick who ran a :59.67 in the 400M to place fifth in that event. Both the 4x100M relay team (Wescott, Enno, Reid, Morris) and the 4x400M relay teams (Reid, Wear, Enno, McCormick) finished in sixth place rounding out the final team points for BSS/SAS. The 4x100M team posted :54.79, just missing the school record, and the 4x400M team posted 4:21.9.

How could it have happened? How could the reporters have missed that small but mighty Miss Ashley Eck who made the journey all the way to Petersburg knowing her soccer coach was waiting in the wings to haul her away!!!

Ashley Eck took the ONLY first place medal in the 400M at Petersburg.....  running 1:05.64

SORRY Ashley. We will work on hiring new press for next year :o)
