Spring Break Takes a Toll
At the Rochester Triangular
Springfield, Illinois - April 2003 A cold and windy Rochester Monday and it
sure didn't seem like spring break time to anyone but the BSS/SAS trackster who
were down 40 runners due to the holiday schedule. Two meets were scheduled
during spring break this year, one in Rochester and the first ever at the SHG
track. The home meet was cancelled because 40 of 83 runners would not be there
due to spring break plans. Although, the Rochester meet went on. Many BSS/SAS
track stars stepped up but overall, the team still felt the loss. 8th grade
girls fell to Rochester with 37 team points to Rochester's 72. Auburn scored 22
points. 8th grade boys fell to Rochester's 66 points and Auburn's 50 points
scoring just 26 points. 7th grade girls lost with 26 points to Rochester's 95.
Auburn scored 13. 7th grade boys lost with 31 points to Rochester's 100 points.
Auburn scored 12. Perhaps next spring the public schools and Catholic schools
will plan holiday schedules at the same time and give their athletes a break!
Though Rochester appeared powerfully strong over BSS/SAS, there were some
stellar performances by individuals from BSS/SAS. 7th grader Chris Frank is
making a name for himself in the distance and middle distance arena running
undefeated in the 1600M (5:46) and now the 800M(2:36). Ashley Eck another 7th
grader is making her presence known in the 400M running 1:08 in Rochester. Both
7th (Malone, Eck, Bramlet, Orlando) and 8th grade( Sergent, Selvaggio, Meyer,
Hanney) girls 4x200M relay teams took first place honors posting 2:05 and 2:01
respectively.
7th grader Jeff Painter is holding tight to his number one spot in the
200M(:28.2) while 7th grader Erin Malone is creeping up on the school record in
the high jump, jumping 4'5" in Rochester. Breanne Sergent just keeps breaking
her own record in the 100M hurdles and lowering her times in the 400M(1:05) as
well, running state time in both events at Rochester. Sergent also jumped 14'
3/4" for first place. Michael Enno took home the gold in both the 1600M and the
200M. What a combination! All BSS/SAS teams will be happy to have the rest of
their teammates back for the Virden meet on Tuesday.
