Virden's Cinder Track
Put Up a bit of a Challenge for BSS/SAS

Springfield, Illinois - April 2003   The sun was shining. It was almost balmy, a welcome change from the wind and rain but what is that on the track?
It looks like black gravel or shredded black glass! "This track is not like our track at SHG."  How soon we forget once the old has been replaced with
the new. While tradition is generally something we enjoy, clearly the BSS/SAS track sprinters were not enjoying the good old fashion cinder track in
Virden. Almost all times were several seconds behind their bests and the 8th grade Girls Team and 7th grade Boys Team suffered individual team losses.  However, the strong distance teams on both the 8th grade Boys Team and the 7th grade Girls Team pulled them to individual team first place victories.

It is a good experience to train on different running surfaces and not only did Virden provide the BSS/SAS track team with a good training experience but it gave them a whole new appreciation for the comforts of their home track.

Chris Frank, Kelby Jasmon, the 4x200M relay team (Steven Begando, Zach Jones, Johnathan McHenry, & Donovan Kavish) and the 4x400M relay team ( Andy Ralph,Val Contri, Chris Frank & Trey Dhabalt) brought home the only gold medals for the 7th grade boys team. Frank took first in the 1600M (5:55) and 800M (2:44.7), while Jasmon threw the discus 71 feet 10 inches to out throw both Virden and Lincoln in that event. The relay teams finished in 2:22 and 5:31 respectively.

Darian Dolenc, Ashley Eck, Molly Bramlet, Erin Hanney, Chrissie Harth and the 4x200M relay team of Eck, Bramlet, Jessica Orlando and Erin Malone were the shining stars pulling the 7th grade girls team into a first place victory over Virden and Lincoln. Dolenc lead the crew in both the 1600M(6:27) and the 800M(3:03) while Bramlet stole first in the 100M dash(:14.06). Erin Hanney pulled out a slim margin victory over teammate Anne Cumming in the 400M dash running 1:17 to Cumming's 1:17.3. Eck, the young lady who has proved this season that no matter what event you put her in she can pull out a first place victory, soared out in front of everyone in the 200M putting up :29.93 on the cinders for first. Chrissie Harth threw 55 feet 7 inches in the shot for another BSS/SAS gold. As always the 4x200 M relay team remains undefeated in a time of 2:12.

It was all about distance for the 8th grade boys. Something every coach loves to see, a one, two, and three order in the 800M run with Jacob Wear(2:45.6) in front followed by Hugh McDermott(2:51) closely trailed by Michael Enno(2:53). And,  a one, two, three and four finish  in the 1600M, this time with McDermott( 5:59)leading the pack followed by Wear (6:00), Colin McCormick (6:05) and Enno(6:07). McCormick sprinted out to a first place position in the 400M posting 1:09 in that event while both 4x200M (Wescott, Johnson, Painter, Cummins) and 4x400M relay team (McCormick, McDermott, Wear, Enno) also, took first place honors posting 2:14.6 and 5:20.9 respectively.  BSS/SAS reigned supreme once more in the jumping events with Chandler Wescott taking first in the long jump(13'9") and Hugh McDermott placing first in the high jump(4'10").

Breanne Sergent, Bridgett Helms, Jenna Reid, Racheal Craighead and Christine Becker made up the entire 8th grade girls team again in Virden. Having to leave behind several key players for the Scholastic Bowl Regionals, a team that has performed quite well all season, but in doing so, left the 8th grade girls track team slightly handicapped due to meet conflicts. However, the lone five-member team managed to pull out a first place finish in 10 of 13 events. Sergent started the meet placing first in the 100M hurdles(:17.25) followed by Helms in the 100M dash(:13.95) and then Reid in the 1600M(6:13) run. Next up was a first and a second place finish by Helms(1:09) and Sergent(1:11.5) in the 400M dash followed by Craighead in the 200M dash(:29.82) and Reid again in the 800M run(2:49.7).  Sergent took first in the long jump(13'8") while Becker placed first in the high jump(4'2"). The girls 4x200M relay team(Helms, Hanney, Craighead, Sergent) remains undefeated(2:09) and the 4x400M relay team (Jaclyn Tracy, Kiley Enno, Anne Cumming, & Darian Dolenc),a group of stand up 7th graders, took first as well(5:26) for the 8th grade girls team. The 8th grade girls team lost to Virden by a slim margin of 4 points. It just goes to prove that every point counts when you are looking for a team victory.

Final Team Scores fell as follows:
7th grade girls - SAS/BSS 79, Virden 61, Franklin 0
8th grade girls -  Virden 58, BSS/SAS 54, Franklin 20
