Eighth Grade Girls Sweep 12 out of 13 Events
At Pawnee/Franklin Triangular

Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004   With the help of sprinter turned middle distance darling Kaeley Luhr(7th grade) and stand-out, newcomer, distance runner, Julia Wykoff(7th grade) in the 4X400M relay, the BSS/SAS 8th grade girls took home the gold in 12 of 13 events on the Pawnee track last Tuesday night. The weather was picture perfect and the team points fell as follows: BSS/SAS 83, Pawnee 36 and Franklin 5!

Erin Hanney and Molly Bramlet started the crushing ball rolling by going one and two in the 100M Dash posting :14.12 and :14.13 respectively. Also going one and two in their events were Jessica Orlando(:30.34) and Lisa Miller(:32.27) in the 200M Dash along with Anne Cumming(2:55) and Olivia Gay(3:07) in the 800M Run. Darian Dolenc continued to tally up the team points with her performance in 1600M run where she placed first in a time of 6:01 just five seconds off state qualifying time! Hanney came back again for another first in the 400M posting 1:08 just four seconds off state qualifying time while Kiley Enno placed a respective third in that same event in a time of 1:16.

The  4x200M, 4x100M, and 4x400M relay teams rounded out the team points for a truly successful night in Pawnee for the 8th grade girls. They have a way to go before they are breaking school record times in those events or making state qualifying times but their coaches are hopeful these girls will see a state birth. Ashley Eck, Malory Davlin, Miller, and Bramlet made up the 4x100M team and posted :57.6 in their event. Orlando, Hanney, Erin Hanney and Bramlet made up the 4x200M team and posted 2:02 in their event. Wykoff, Dolenc, Luhr and Eck formed a first ever 4x400M team posting 4:46 in their event.

The BSS/SAS girls proved they could not only dominate on the track but in the field as well. Rachel Jennings scooped up both first place finishes in the shot (22'5") and the discus(69'). A throw of 69' in the discus landed Jennings with a new school record in that event. Abby Rocco and Enno went one and two in the long jump with two personal bests of 13' and 12' 10 respectively. However, the biggest kudos of all goes out to Miss Erin Malone in the high jump where she jumped unchallenged for first place in a school record high of 5'0". That is state qualifying height. Malone participated in high jump last year and will undoubtedly be back this year with something to talk about! Mallory Davlin rounded out team points with second place in the 100M hurdles in a time of :18.12.

Seventh Grade BSS/SAS Girls
Share the Spotlight in the Victory Circle

Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004  Young distance runner Julia Wykoff continues to lead the charge in the distance events now simply bettering her state qualifying times. Prior to the meet's start, Wykoff was set to run the 1600M Run and one leg of the 8th grade 4X400M relay when she asked to be placed in the 7th grade girl's 800M as well. "Sure Julia, if you think you can handle all of that running you are welcome to do it," said her coaches. To nobodies' surprise, Wykoff led the 800M run and went two seconds under state qualifying time posting 2:38, which, by the way, is the state qualifying time for the 8th grade girls. She ran 5:48.9 in the 1600M run.

Bumping up Wykoff and Luhr to the 8th grade division both running 400M legs of the 4x400M relay team gave some others their 15minutes of fame in the open 400M at the 7th grade level. Megan Lazell was the shining star in the 400M Dash with teammate Jill Haxel right behind her. The girls went one and two in that event posting 1:13.5 and 1:16.8 respectively. Another BSS/SAS one and two victory came in the 200M Dash with Katherine Drake(:31.25) and Jessica Megginson(:33.33). Cara Workman placed second in the 100M hurdles in a time of :21.47 while Ketchum placed second in the 100M Dash in a time of :14.58.

Relay teams reigned supreme in Pawnee with the 7th grade girls 4x100M relay team of Kaeley Luhr, Shay Reid, Danielle Ketchum and Haley Evans not only taking another meet first place finish but also setting a new school record of :58.73. It was their own school record as 6th graders last year that they reset. The 4x200M relay team of Evans, Reid, Drake and Ketchum took another first posting 2:02.7. The 4x400M relay team of Abby Vespa, Rachel Ahrens, Alaina Selvaggio and Kelly Korza took second in a time of 5:20.

Two firsts out of four in the field events seemed easy to come by. Placing first in field events were Shay Reid with a personal best of 12'5" in long jump and Haley Evans with a personal best of 4'2" in High Jump. Lilly Cricione took third in the shot put throwing 17"7". Finishing third and adding to at team victory were Reid in the 100M (:15.09) Vespa in the 800M (3:03) and Haxel in the long jump (11'10"). Final team scores for the 7th grade girls fell as follows: BSS/SAS 67, Pawnee 46, Franklin 11.

Frank Takes Care of the Distance
While Painter Takes Care of the Sprinting

Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004  Both distance runner, Chris Frank, and sprinter, Jeff Painter, have been a part of the BSS/SAS track teams since they were in the 6th grade. Now, as 8th graders, their best efforts seem to consistently land them first place finishes be it a leg of a relay team or an individual race. Painter competed in both the 100M Dash and the 200M Dash and took first in both. He bettered his own school record in the 100M (:12.54) and is creeping up on the 200M school record set by Michael Enno last year.   Painter ran :26.8 in Pawnee. Chris Frank continues to better his own time in the 1600M run and is just one second off Jacob Wear's 1600M school record of last year. Frank ran a 5:22.9 in the 1600M run. Frank also finished second in the 400M Run in a time of 1:05.

Painter ran the last leg of the 4X200M relay team where he along with Nick Garcia, John Zimmerman and Eric Peters posted 1:57 for first. And, Frank ran the last leg of the 4x400M relay team where he along with Tom Newell, Trey Dhabalt and Patrick Ryan took another first in a time of 4:25.2. Finishing third in Pawnee and rounding out team point totals were Garcia in the 400M(1:06), Peters in the 200M (:29.63), Peters in the discus(75'), and Tommy Lord in the long jump (13' 8 3/4"), and Newell in the high jump (5'). The BSS/SAS 4x100M relay team of Lord, Dhabalt, Zimmerman and Peters also took third in a time of :56.48. Final team scores for the 8th grade boys fell as follows: Pawnee 60, BSS/SAS 47, and Franklin 24.

7th Grade Boys Place Second
At Pawnee/Franklin Triangular

Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004  When it comes to the 7th grade boys BSS/SAS team, Jonathan McHenry was the name most heard from in Pawnee. He was missing his sidekick Donovan Kavish who was otherwise engaged in a Scholastic Bowl meet, but, he held his own very well taking home one first place finish and three second place finishes in the events he was in at Pawnee. Sean Ryan would be the other 7th grader to watch, a newcomer to the BSS/SAS team and a promising distance specialist.

McHenry placed first in the shot (33'1/2"), second in the 200M (:29.95), second in the discus (63'4"), and second in the 4x100M relay along with Addison Eck, Tim Dhabalt, and Matt Call in a time of :57.6. Distance runner Sean Ryan placed second in the 800M run in a time of 2:50. Another second place win came from Zach Jones a veteran distance runner and talented sprinter as well. Jones posted 6:31 for the mile run. The final second place finish came from Peter Miller in the high jump leaping 4'8". The last of the first place team points came from Call, Jones, Jared Jachino and Brydl in the 4x200M relay in a time of 2:04.

Third place finishers and team point winners were: Joey Showtis in the 1600M Run at 6:41, Zach Boente in the 400M Dash in 1:14, Tim Dhabalt in the 800M Run in 2:51 and Nathan Jennings in both the shot(23'5") and the discus(58'11").
