Girls Win Again in Pawnee
But Third Time Was No Charm
For the Boys Teams
Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004 According to some distance running experts,
typically the cooler weather brings about better times for the distance runner
and slower times for the sprinter. That was not the case at the Pawnee/Virden
triangular meet when both the BSS/SAS girls' teams took home top honors for the
third meet in a row! It was bitter cold and very windy on the south curve. The
winds took a toll on distance times but, the sprinters seemed to run with the
wind at their backs as they bettered times across the board.
This was the third meet that sixth graders were able to attend and many of them
stepped up and made their presence known. Michael Brydl, Matt Call, Jared
Jachino, Tim Dhabalt, Sean Ryan, Sean McConnell, Sarah Giacomini, Alaina
Selvaggio, Kelly Korza, and Allison Boyer all had outstanding performances in
the events they took part in. For such a young group, they are clearly making a
contribution to the team. Addison Eck, Nathan Jennings, and Logan Powell were
not present this time in Pawnee but they too are amongst the young ones to
watch! Just think they have two more years of promise for the BSS/SAS track
program.
4x200M relay teams took first place at all levels. This seems to be a favorite
event for the BSS/SAS coaches as they have sent a 4x200M relay team to the state
meet every year since the program began four years ago. Last year, two 4x200M
relay teams qualified at the state level and one of them came home a state
champion! Will we see that again this year? "Time" will tell.
4x200M teams fell as follows in Pawnee: 8th grade girls: Molly Bramlet, Erin
Malone, Abby Rocco, and Erin Hanney posted 2:08.5; 7th grade girls: Haley Evans,
Katherine Drake, Kaeley Luhr and Danielle Ketchum posted 2:08.9; 8th grade boys:
Eric Peters, Tommy Lord, Trey Dhabalt and Jeff Painter posted 2:02.3; 7th grade
boys: Donovan Kavish, Michael Brydl, Sean McConnel and Jon McHenry posted
2:08.7. It looks like it might be "time" to pin the girls against the boys in a
home meet?
Other boys finishing in the gold were: McHenry in the shot(31'8") just creeping
up on Jeff Sanders record and a potential trip to state, as well as, Painter in
the 200M Dash posting a personal best of :26.04. Painter holds the school record
in the 100M dash and is working hard on reestablishing the 200M dash record as
well.
As for the BSS/SAS superstar women's teams, the first place winners were almost
too many to count. Even in the wind Julia Wykoff managed a first in the 1600M
run and the 800M run. Make your plans now to travel with her to state on both
Friday and Saturday May 21 &22. Kaely Luhr just barely held off teammate Megan
Lazell in the 400M run where both girls ran a perfect stride for stride race up
through the last thirty feet. The girls placed first and second respectively in
times of 1:13.8 and 1:14.9. If you are questioning what proper running form is,
pay attention to these two ladies because they've got it going on!
Sarah Giacomini came out of nowhere to show she has some sprinting skills that
may have been overlooked by her coaches. In a crowd of 98, we can't imagine how
that could happen. In Pawnee, Giacomini was definitely running with the best
placing first in the 200M Dash in a time of :30.8, a time that will not only
secure her a top seed in the next meet but land her in a spot in some very
coveted relays as well.
Speaking of first place relay teams, the 4x400M relay team of sixth graders
Allison Boyer and Alaina Selvaggio along with 7th graders Abby Vespa and Megan
Lazell was just nine seconds off a school record time. They posted 5:05 for
first while Haley Evans took the last of the 7th grade girls first place
finishes in the high jump(4'0").
The 8th grade girls' team was missing standout sprinter Jessica Orlando due to
illness but they still succeeded in taking first place in nine out of thirteen
events. Malory Davlin was finally able to get the Pawnee hurdling monkey off her
back by stealing first in the 100M hurdles running her best time of the season
:18.04. Pawnee's Henry has taken first at the last two meets but Davlin decided
she was no longer going to settle for second best.
Erin Malone displaced teammate Molly Bramlet in the 100M dash where the girls
went :14.0 and :14.3 respectively for first and second place in that event.
Kiley Enno settled into a pace in the 1600M for first in a time of 6:51. Erin
Hanney(1:12) and Anne Cumming(2:58) both struggled with the winds of Pawnee but
managed to pulled out a first place victory in the 400M and 800M respectively.
Erin Malone remains undefeated and unchallenged in the high jump(4'10") and
Rachel Jennings secured another first in the discus throw(56'6"). The final
first place for the 8th grade girls' team came from the 4x100M relay team of
Bramlet, Davlin, Cumming and Malone in a time of :59.29. Total Team Points for
all divisions fell as follows:
7th boys: PDK...65, BSS/SAS....34, V......41; 8th boys: PDK....52, BSS/SAS
.....27.5, V.......61.5; 7th girls: PDK....39, BSS/SAS.....52, V.....43; 8th
girls: PDK...37, BSS/SAS....61, V......33. Next meet is in Chatham on Wednesday,
April 21st.
