Eighth Grade Girls Take Charge
At Chatham/Mt. Zion Triangular

 


Chatham, Illinois - April 2004   The weather was perfect and the fans were cheering as the BSS/SAS 8th grade girls took home the gold in 9 of 13 events on the Chatham track last Wednesday night. The team points fell as follows: BSS/SAS 68.5, Chatham 55.5 and Mt. Zion 7. 

Molly Bramlet started BSS/SAS off right by placing first in the 100M Dash (:14.1), with Erin Malone(:14.42) and Danielle Ketchum(:14.4) placing 3rd and 4th in that event, respectively.  Supercharged hurdlers Mallory Davlin(:18.7) and Anne Cumming(:19.8) tallied more points for the team with 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the hurdles.  Darian Dolenc cranked out great performances in the 1600M(6:07) and 800M((2:47), breezing by with a first place finish in both events!  Kiley Enno gave an admirable effort in the 1600M(6:49) as well, getting a personal best time and securing a third place finish for the team.  Melissa Gay was a strong distance contributor in the 800M(2:49), grabbing a 2nd place finish and also giving a personal best performance!  The gals supreme effort continued with Ashley Eck(1:07.5) and Erin Hanney(1:08.8) going one and two respectively in the 400M Dash.  Tried & True sprinters Jessica Orlando(:29.4), personal best) and Molly Bramlet (:30.4) gave consistent efforts and received 2nd and 3rd place finishes respectively in the 200M.

As for the 8th grade girls relay teams, it was all maroon & gold.  The BSS/SAS 4X100M  team of Miller, Davlin, Rocco, Bramlet(:59.3); the 4X200M team of Orlando, Hanney, Malone, Eck; and the 4X400M team of O.Gay, Enno, M.Gay, Dolenc(5:01) ALL took FIRST place finishes, with the 4X200 relay displaying its best time yet this year posting 1:58.8!

The BSS/SAS 8th grade girls proved they could not only rack up the points on the track but in the field as well. Rachel Jennings scooped up 3rd place finishes in both the shot (22'4")and the discus(58'). BSS/SAS jumpers Erin Malone (HJ, 4'6") and Kiley Enno (LJ,12'5") both reigned supreme as first place finishers in their events.

Chatham, Illinois - April 2004  Young distance runner Julia Wykoff continues to shine as she took charge and took first place in the 1600M(5:50).  Placing 4th in the 1600M and getting a personal best time of 7:07 was Julie McDermott.  Also giving a strong effort and improving her time in the mile run for a personal best was Morgan Clem at 7:24.  Cara Workman, posting :21.4, was a contributor in the 100M hurdles, securing a 3rd place individual finish for the team.  Haley Evans(:14.9) gave a sound effort in the 100M Dash and took 3rd place.  It was Danielle Ketchum(:30.3) and Sarah Giacomini(:31.29) scoring the points in the 200M, taking 3rd and 4th place respectively.  Abby Vespa placed 3rd in the 800M(2:55.9), attaining a personal best with her time.  Kaylee Sables also helped the team out in the 800M(3:09.9) with a 4th place finish.  The 7th grade ladies of BSS/SAS gave solid performances in the 4X100, 4X200, and 4X400 relays, placing second in all three relays.

Assisting the team effort with points in the field were Haley Evans and Katherine Drake, who tied for 2nd place with high jump posting 4'2".  Shay Reid (12') and Danielle Ketchum(11'11") secured 3rd and 4th place respectively in the long jump.   Final scores for the 7th grade girls fell as follows:  Chatham 90, BSS/SAS 34, Mt. Zion 10



 

8th Grade Boys Valiant Effort
Brings Home the Gold!

 


Chatham, Illinois - April 2004   The 8th grade Allstars were able to grab the gold from Chatham for the first time since the BSS/SAS track program began four years ago. All around amazing athlete Nick Garcia shone brightly as he broke not one but TWO school records and attained personal bests in THREE events!  Nick reset his own school record in the 100M hurdles with a new time of :18.7. He now holds the 8th grade boys long jump record leaping 15'5" a record that has not been broken in four years. Finally, Garcia attained a personal best time in the 400M of 105.5 for a 2nd place individual finish. 

Chris Frank gave a phenomenal performance in the 800M(2:26, a personal best time), placing 2nd, and also an admirable run in the 1600M(5:26), placing 3rd.  Tom Newell, a solid distance contributor this season, placed 4th in the 1600M with a time of 5:41.  Patrick Ryan, another consistent distance runner for the team this season, placed 3rd in the 400M(1:07).  Fireball sprinter Jeff Painter took care of business in the 100M(:12.5) and 200M(:26.4), grabbing first place in both events!  Tom Newell helped rack up more points in the 200M(:28.1) with a 3rd place individual finish.  Trey Dhabalt, a dependable distance runner for the team, placed 4th in the 800M and also attained a personal best time of 2:38.

Once again, it was nothing but maroon and gold flying by in the relays!  The 4X100 relay, composed of John Zimmerman, Trey Dhabalt, Eric Peters, and Jeff Painter strided to first with a "relay best" time of 54.8, just missing the school record by 1.1 seconds!  The 4X400 relay, consisting of Chris Frank, Nick Garcia, Patrick Ryan, and Tom Newell made it look effortless as they sailed around the track for a "relay best" time of 4:18, another near miss of the school record by 3 seconds!  A solid effort was also given in the 4X200 relay made up of Tom Lord, Zach Jones, Ryan Curry, and Joey Huddleston posting a time of 2:04.

Helping round out the score in the field were Joey Huddleston(4'10") and Tom Lord (4'8") in the High Jump, taking first and second respectively.  Ryan Curry added points to the score by placing 4th in the shot put(21') and Eric Peters placed 3rd in Discus to attain a personal best throw of 76 feet!  Nick Garcia at 15'5" and Joey Huddleston at 14'3" dominated the Long Jump pit with 1st and 3rd respectively.  Final tallies for the 8th grade boys were: BSS/SAS 51, Chatham 42, Mt. Zion 23.
 


7th Grade Boys Face Fierce Competition Bravely!

 


Pawnee, Illinois - April 2004  When it comes to the 7th grade boys BSS/SAS team, Jonathan McHenry makes his mark every time.  McHenry took the gold in Shot Put, with a throw of 34'1".  Blake Curry was also heard from in the field with a 4th place finish and a throw of 24'2".  Donovan Kavish added to the team score by placing 4th in the Discus, hurling it 67'7".  High Jumper Peter Miller(4'8") secured a 3rd place finish, while Long Jumper  Zach Jones received a 4th place with a personal best jump of 13'2.5" 

The runners had a tough day on the scoreboard, but many attained personal best times in light of the fierce competition.  Distance standout Mike Witsman placed 3rd in the 1600M(5:54.4), and while not placing in the 800M attained a personal best time of 2:56.4.  Sean Ryan, another BSS/SAS distance standout, put forth strong efforts in both the 1600M(6:17.1), also a personal best time, and 800M(2:52.4).  Joey White(3:03.3), Andrew Kelley(3:03.9), and Matt Wesley(3:13.3) gave it their all in the 800M.  Joey Showtis(6:43.8), Griffin Ludwig(7:06) and Brendan Cavanagh(7:49.9) gave admirable efforts in the 1600M, with Cavanagh attaining his personal best time.  

Steven Begando(1:09.7), Zach Boente(1:12.9), and Logan Powel (1:17.1) cranked out solid performances in the 400M, with Boente attaining a personal best time.   It was a tough day for the 7th grade sprinters, but Matt Call, Ryan Butler, Tim Dhabalt, and Donovan Kavish were vigorous competitors in their events.  Final team scores for the 7th grade boys fell as follows: Mt. Zion 56, Chatham 50, BSS/SAS 12.
