March 31,
2004
Welcome To The Sport of Track & Field
Pawnee, Illinois - March 2004 Standout distance runner Hailee Elmore was in
7th grade when she discovered her love for running. It was then that she started
resetting state records. On March 31, 2004, just three years later, in comes
Julia Wykoff, another 7th grader from Blessed Sacrament to shatter the state
qualifying time for 7th grade girls at her first ever meet posting a 5:49 for
the 1600M run. 7th grade girls' state qualifying time for the 1600M run is 5:58.
This was Wykoff's first track meet experience and the first triangular meet of
the season for BSS/SAS. She also placed first in the 7th grade girls' 400M Dash
posting 1:10. Other firsts came from Katherine Drake in the 200M(:31.3), Haley
Evans in the high jump(4' 2") and the state bound 4x200M relay team(2:01) of
Danielle Ketchum, Kaeley Luhr, Shay Reid and Evans. Keep in mind this is just
the beginning of what is to come in May.
Securing a solid first place team finish was the BSS/SAS 8th grade girls team
with first place finisher and standout Molly Bramlet in the 100M dash with a
time of :13.95. Bramlet qualified for state last year in this same event. Kiley
Enno took first in the 1600M run posting a 7:04. Another of last year's state
qualifiers, Ashley Eck, took first in the 400M posting 1:07. Again, a state
qualifier from last season, Jessica Orlando, took first in the 200M posting
:29.5. Darian Dolenc was looking strong in the 800M posting 2:49 to take first
place while Rachel Jennings broke the school record in the shot put tossing it
23' for first place. Erin Malone is looking to better her achievements at state
last year in the high jump by starting off her season with a height of 4'8" for
first. Last year's state qualifying 4x200M relay team of Bramlet, Eck, Orlando
and Malone, is looking for a return trip putting up a 2:03 for a first place
finish in that event. The 4x400M relay team of Enno, Melissa Gay, Abbey Rocco
and Leslie Criscione ended the run of first place finishes for the night posting
5:09. The 8th grade girls took a total of nine first place finishes for an easy
win over PDK and Tri-City.
Complete team results fell as follows:
8th grade girls took 1st... BSS/SAS… 87, Pawnee...74, Tri-city...12
7th grade girls took 2nd... Pawnee...74, BSS/SAS...70, Tri-City...32
7th grade boys took 2nd... Pawnee… 88, BSS/SAS... 56, Tri-City...42
8th grade boys took 2nd... Pawnee... 83, BS BSS/SAS...74, Tri-City 20
Athletes to watch this season from the BSS/SAS 8th grade boys' team are distance
runners Chris Frank and newcomer Tom Newel along with sprinters Jeff Painter and
Nick Garcia. Both Painter and Frank were on the brim of making state times last
year. Perhaps this year will be their year. Painter took first in the 100M
resetting a long standing school record set by Ryan Farris in 2000, with a time
of :12.6 while Garcia ran a personal best in the 200M putting up a :28.09 for
first place. Frank took first in both his favorite races the 1600M run posting
5:29 and 2:30 in the 800M. A great start to a perfect season.
Newell made his presence known by running a 1:04 for first place in the 400M
dash. Jonathan McHenry was all about power in the shot placing first with a 34'
3" throw. Although only a 7th grader, McHenry was throwing shot in the 8th
grade division at this meet. The 4x200M relay team rounded out the night with a
final first in that event posting 1:56. Look for that school record to be broken
soon by relay team members Eric Peters, Trey Dhabalt, Newell and Painter.
It was Tim Dhabalt that brought the crowd to their feet for the 6th/7th grade
boys team. Although Dhabalt is just a 6th grader, his lightening speed is a
force to be reckoned with. Dhabalt brought his 4x100M relay team from last place
to first place during his leg of the relay although the team ended with a
disappointing third to Tri-City and Pawnee, in a decent time of 1:03 for a
complete relay team of sixth graders. Dhabalt regained his momentum when he
jumped into the 800M at the last minute and finished second to 7th grader Busch
from Pawnee who ran 2:37 while Dhabalt posted 2:51. Not too shabby for a newbie.
Donovan Kavish and Jonathan McHenry are the two 7th graders we will be keeping
our eye on this spring. Kavish took two individual firsts and another in the
4x200M relay team that is vying for a new school record posting 2:05.7. The
4x200M relay team consists of Kavish, McHenry, Zach Jones and Steven Begando.
Kavish placed first in the 100M with a time of 13.6 and first in the discus
hurling the disc 71' 4.5".
Although a little chilly the weather was not too bad for the first meet of the
season. The BSS/SAS athletes are in good shape for this point in their season
and now everyone has their own personal starting point for setting season goals.
Next meet is on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 back in Pawnee.
