Petersburg Invite NOT CANCELLED
Decatur, Illinois - May 2004 The skies opened up in Springfield last Saturday
but the annual Petersburg Invite went on implementing the statute; in the sport
of Track & Field, you run, jump and throw rain or shine as long as there is no
lightening. While chilling winds were blowing, there was no lightening in
Petersburg and the meet started on time at 9:15 a.m. and ended just before 4:00
p.m. At this time there is still no fax from Petersburg so "official' meet
results are still unknown. Hopefully, those results will be forthcoming and at
that time we will share the official final team points for all attendees.
In the meantime, it is important to note those people who bettered their times
and distances at Petersburg on May 1, 2004.
In the 800m run it was eighth grader Darian Dolenc in a time of 2:41 and Tim
Dhabalt, a sixth grader, in a time of 2:50.
Haley Evans went home happy with a personal best in the 200m dash in a time of
:32.18.
Nick Garcia, eighth grader from St. Agnes, has been taking home plenty of
hardware at the last few meets and he continues to better his time by posting
1:01.6 in the 400m dash. Tom Newell finally had some true competition in the
400m, which caused him to better his personal best in that event with a time of
1:00.
But, it was Kaeley Luhr and Alaina Selvaggio from the girls' side who proved
their success in the 400m with PR's of 1:11 and 1:12 respectively. This is only
Alaina's first year in the sport and Kaeley's second. Both girls have been huge
surprises in the 400m dash this season.
Julia Wykoff has all but sealed her trip to the state meet on May 21st with a PR
in the 1600m of 5:46. Julia has not only consistently met the 7th grade
qualifying standards in that event but the 8th grade qualifying standards as
well.
When we were looking at distance events, it was Nick Lanzotti in both the discus
and shot throwing PR's. Nick threw 19'5" in the shot and 54'4" in the discus.
Nick is also a sixth grader and new to the sport of track and field. Speaking
of field success' Danielle Ketchum and Shay Ried have all but secured their
sectional spots in the long jump. Both girls jumped a PR of 12'6.5" in
Petersburg.
The long awaited best time for the 8th grade girls 4x200m relay team who has
made a trip to state every year since they were all in the 6th grade came on
Saturday. Jessica Orlando, Erin Hanney, Erin Malone, and Ashley Eck had perfect
hand offs and posted a PR of 1:58.6 proving that the state qualifying time of
1:57 is well within their reach. It is a race you won't want to miss come
Saturday, May 15, 2004.
The final best efforts in Petersburg came from Jill Haxel, Sarah Giacomini,
Kelly Korza and Alaina Selvaggio in the 4x400m relay with a time of 5:02.6.
Though we do not have official results from the Petersburg Invite, it should be
known that plenty of heavy-duty hardware was handed out to the BSS/SAS track
stars after the meet; first place medallions, second, third, fourth and fifth
place ribbons.
