A Note to Parents

Dear Parents,

It’s been another short week filled with lots of plans and activities.  The Mardi Gras Carnival, sponsored by the eighth graders on Tuesday, was enjoyed by all the students.  Not only did the students have a great time, but they also raised money to help the people in Haiti.  We extend a special thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped the carnival run smoothly.  Thanks, also, to those who donated candy, soda, and supplies for the event.  Thanks, especially, to the eighth graders and their moderators for this event, Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Gregory, and Mrs. Schraeder, for all of their efforts to make this a successful fundraiser for those in need and a fun way to celebrate Fat Tuesday!

Yesterday morning all of our students attended Mass on Ash Wednesday and received ashes.  Father explained that Lent is a time to pray and sacrifice without expecting recognition for it.  The ashes are a reminder that we do sin and need to work on being better Christians.  We appreciate your help and support at home as your children work on making and keeping their Lenten promises.

Both our seventh and eighth graders have been busy this week with their preparations for the Science and History Fair being held in our school gym this weekend.  Special thanks to Mrs. Cornelius, Mrs. Healy, Mrs. Reiser, Mrs. Gregory, and Mrs. Alan for all their help with the students’ projects and research papers.  Also, we extend our thanks to the sixth grade parents who will be hearing the seventh graders’ presentations after school tomorrow.

Don’t forget to stop by the gym after any Mass this weekend to view the projects.  We are always so proud of our students’ efforts.  We ask that students pick up their projects between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.  If you are unable to pick up a project by 2:30 p.m., please make arrangements to pick up the project before school on Monday.

Our open house will be this Sunday, Feb. 21, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.  If you know of any families that possibly would be interested in attending, please invite them to the open house.  Of course, we welcome calls to learn more about the school or to set up a tour at any time.

Good luck to Elena Reyhan and Andrew Hoffmann who are competing in the Sangamon County Non-Public Spelling Bee at Springfield Christian School this Saturday.  We know they will be excellent representatives of our school!

Tomorrow is a regular dismissal day and a regular uniform day for our students.  PSA will be selling nachos ($1.50 per order & 50 cents for extra cheese) and popcorn (50 cents per bag) tomorrow.  Extra helpers are always need and appreciated!  (There will not be a separate BSSPSA newsletter being sent home this week.  They deserve a break after all of their organization for Catholic Schools Week!)

Hope to see you at the Science and History Fair this weekend!

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Mrs. Kathy Wear

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Jacks Hyde in third grade on the birth of his baby brother, John Bosco Pio.  He was born on Wednesday, February 3, and weighed 5 lbs., 14 ounces and was 19 ¾ inches long.  Congratulations to their parents, John and Angie, and their brother, Augustine, too!

Helping Hands for Haiti

Over the past few weeks our students have been raising money to help with the relief efforts in Haiti.  Through the coin drive our students raised $4,073.90!  In addition, the non-uniform day raised $985.79.  By asking for an extra dollar for admission to our junior high dance, another $250 was raised for Haiti.  Tomorrow we will be delivering a check for $5,309.69 to Vicki Compton, Diocesan Director of the Office for Missions, for use by Catholic Relief Services in Haiti.  Thanks to all of our families for your overwhelming generosity!

Art Club Display

Two new talented eighth graders are being highlighted in a new Art Club display located outside the school library and art room.  Allyson Padget and Brooke Caruso share their creativity by showing their wonderful and inspiring sketchbook selections.  Their love of drawing and sketching ideas is certainly evident!  Be sure to check out Allyson’s vacation sketches and Brooke’s fun fashion ideas along with much more!  Hint:  Sketchbooks are a great tool---and lots of fun---for all aspiring artists!  Great work, girls!

Tuition & Building on Tradition Updates

Last night our Finance Council and School Advisory Board approved a tuition schedule for the 2010-2011 school year.  They approved a $100 increase in tuition per family.  According to that schedule, for next school year the tuition cost for one child will be $3,580; tuition for two children will be $5,160, and the tuition cost for 3 or more children will be $6,680.  Non-parish tuition will be $5,100 per child.  (See article about registration call-in for preschool tuition rates.)

We will continue to have financial aid available to all families who qualify for the assistance.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to call Mrs. Wear at 522-7534, ext. 200.

At the meetings last night, Father Hoefler also updated us on the Building on Tradition Campaign.  Bids from the contractors are due back next Wednesday.  In the upcoming weeks look for new updates, including a groundbreaking date and more!  Thanks for all of your support as we begin this exciting project!

Registration for 2010-2011

Registration for the 2010-2011 school year begins on Monday, March 1.  On that day parents interested in registering their child in either a preschool or a kindergarten class may call the school, beginning at 9:00 a.m., to place their child on a class list.  For the upcoming school year, we will be offering a Tuesday/Thursday morning class for three-year-olds ($95 per month), a Monday/Wednesday/Friday morning class for four-year-olds ($120 per month), a Monday through Friday afternoon class for four and five-year-olds ($165 per month), and an all-day preschool class for four and five-year-olds ($3,580 per year).  After students have been placed on a class list, registration information will be mailed to the parents.  All current students will receive registration packets on March 1.

Youth Writing Contest

The American Red Cross is once again sponsoring a writing contest for all students.  Some teachers may be working with their classes on this, but individual students are welcome to submit their essays.  Grades K-4 are asked to write on the topic “I Know a Hero”.  The writing topic for grades 5-8 is “A Hero in My Family”.  Winners will receive a $300 savings bond.  (We have had several winners in the past.)  A flyer with additional information is available outside the school office.  Please note that individual essays are due next Friday, Feb. 26.  (They may be submitted to the school for delivery to the Red Cross.)

Box Tops Update

Congratulations to the winning classrooms for last week’s Box Tops Winter Olympics event.  Room 3 (Mrs. Townsend) won gold; room 5 (Mrs. Williamson) won silver; and room 7 (Mrs. Bloome) won bronze.  This week’s contest is the curling event, and box tops are due by tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 19, for this competition.

Look for a collection sheet being sent home next Monday.  As we are so close to our March 1st submission deadline, any student who returns a collection sheet by next Thursday, Feb. 25, will qualify for an individual Spirit Day on Friday, Feb. 26.  Help us reach our goal!

Totus Tuus

You might want to mark your calendars now so you don't miss this awesome summer activity, which will be June 6th-11th.  As this program was such a huge hit with the students last year, Blessed Sacrament will again be hosting Totus Tuus.  The program runs for one week and includes solid faith-forming, fun activities, all presented by trained and enthusiastic college students.  It will be offered for students going into 1st through 12th grade with 1st through 6th graders meeting during the day and 7th through 12th graders meeting in the evening.  More info will follow as summer approaches.  Questions? Call Angie Hyde at 891-4619 or email her at 3hydeboys13@gmail.com
