A Note to Parents

Dear Parents,

It was a busy weekend followed by a full week of activities.  The Annual Auction was another successful event, thanks to the many people who helped with the planning and preparations, made donations, attended the event, and helped with clean-up.  The school is deeply appreciative of the enormous financial benefit that the auction provides, and the fellowship enjoyed that evening was just as important.  Thanks to all of you who had a part in it!

On Tuesday our students were photographed for our yearbook by Lifetouch Studio.  Those who ordered photos should receive them in a few weeks.  The make-up date for absent students and others who might request retakes has been set for Friday, Nov. 13.

Tomorrow our eighth graders will introduce the character trait for October, respect for self, at an all-school assembly.  Thanks to Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Senger, Mrs. Gregory, and Mrs. Pierce for helping with our character ed program.

Tomorrow is a regular dismissal day, but it is also a Spirit Day for our students.  Please see the related article regarding acceptable clothing.  Thanks!  Have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

                                                                Mrs. Kathy Wear

Life Chain

All Blessed Sacrament students and their families are invited to participate in the Springfield Right to Life’s Annual Life Chain to be held on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. along MacArthur Boulevard.  It is a wonderful opportunity to show your support for life, especially as a family.  Our Gospel of Life Committee is again offering free ice cream coupons from Baskin and Robbins to all school/parish students who attend the event.

Speech Contest

The Catholic Grade Schools Speech Contest for 7th & 8th graders will be held at Blessed Sacrament on Saturday morning, Nov. 7.  Students have had the opportunity to choose speeches.  If any other 7th or 8th grade students are interested in participating, please see Mrs. Bucklin.

Directory Correction

The phone number for the family of Peter Mokhoff in kindergarten was printed incorrectly in the student directory.  The correct phone number is 720-5867.  Please mark your directory with this correction.  We apologize for the inconvenience.  (If there are any other corrections or any changes throughout the school year that you would like to pass on to our school community, please call the school office with the information to be included in the newsletter.

PSA Spirit Day

For tomorrow’s Spirit Day, Friday, Oct. 2, students may wear any BSS or any sports team t-shirt/shirt/jersey.  (If a sleeveless jersey is worn, please have your child wear a plain white or navy shirt under the jersey.)  Pants are limited to jeans, capris, or uniform shorts.  (No other types of shorts are acceptable.)  Another option for the $1 donation is to wear the uniform polo shirt untucked along with uniform shorts, capris,  or jeans.  All other non-uniform guidelines apply.  (A flyer is being sent home today for students to order t-shirts or sweatshirts to be worn for future Spirit Days.  This will be the last regular Spirit Day that jerseys from any team may be worn.)

5th Grade Notecards

The children’s art projects were definitely one of the highlights of this year’s auction.  The fifth graders’ artwork were printed on notecards, which are still available for sale.  A package includes 18 notecards for $20, and they are available in the school office.  (Two sets of cards are available, one from Mrs. Bucklin’s homeroom and one from Mrs. Valdez’s homeroom.)  Stop by the office to pick up your notecards, or send payment to the office, and the cards will be sent home with your child.

Homework Reminders

If your child forgets an item for homework, please return to school as soon as possible.  After 3:30 p.m. there may not be office personnel available to take a child to a classroom.  Our custodians are not allowed to open rooms for any students or parents, and no students, including B.A.S.E. students, should be in classrooms without the supervision of a teacher after school.  (B.A.S.E. parents also should not go to classrooms without a teacher or B.A.S.E. worker.)  Thanks for your help!

Homework on the School Website

Just a reminder that parents can access homework assignments through our school website, www.bssbruins.org.  Click on “Homework & Classroom News” on the left side of the web page.  It will link you to “SchoolNotes.com”, and then you enter the school zip code, 62704.  The next page will list teachers, and you just click on the teacher’s name.  If you do not find your teacher listed there, look above the list to the box outlined in red and click on “NewSchoolNotes”.   The other teachers’ assignments should be listed there, and you just click on the subject.  Although it is each student’s responsibility to record assignments in those grades using agendas, the website gives parents the opportunity to check on assignments, as needed.

Family Service Hours

Please remember that one change in the family service hour policy this year is that we will no longer keep track of service hours earned over the required 20 hours.  If you have not turned in any service hours you have earned so far, please send them to the office at your convenience.  A report of those service hours submitted will be included in the first quarter report card.

Harvest of Thanks Endowment

We recently received a check for $1,735.00 from the Diocese from the Harvest of Thanks, Springtime of Hope Endowment.  This money is being used to provide financial assistance to students attending Blessed Sacrament who have demonstrated financial need.  Thanks to all of you who supported this campaign.

Transportation Reimbursement Program

This past week we received a notice from the Illinois State Board of Education that the lack of state funding for the FY 2010 will prevent the board from paying any transportation claims filed for the 2008-2009 school year.  These payments are normally paid in December for the previous school year.  If funds are restored to this program, then payments will be made.  We will inform you if any funds are restored.

Sidewalk Use

We are trying to grow grass in certain areas, especially by the front entrance to school.  Please help us by reminding your children to stay off the grass and use the sidewalks as they enter and exit school.  Thanks!

Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy

Blessed Sacrament School admits students of any race, color, sex, or national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.  It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, or national and ethnic origin in the

administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarships and loan programs, and athletic and school administered programs.
