Grade Girls Springfield,
Illinois -- May 2002--- Eyes gawked as the Washington Middle School runners
climbed off the bus at Memorial Field on Thursday afternoon. In fact, I heard
one coach say, "Are you sure these kids are not here for the High School
meet?" They looked big and strong and not easily beaten. Without a doubt
the BSS/SAS 7th grade girls were up against one of the toughest teams they had
run against all season. 8th Grade Girls Trott three stepped those 110M hurdles to the tune of :17.7 for first, took first with a personal best in the long jump at 14' 9" and came from behind as the anchor on the 4x400M relay team for a new school record. (4:58) Emily Schmidt, Katie Jasmon and Maureen O'Marro were a tremendous help to Trott in breaking that record. Hailee Elmore posted her state record holding time of 5:15 in the 1600M and she ran state qualifying time in the 400M(1:03). Elmore is also the lead runner on a screaming fast 4x200M relay team that includes Anna Newell, Bridget Helms, and Breanne Sergent. The girls finished first with a time of 1:59 ahead of CTK who ran 2:26. Kimberly Magerl secured a first place finish and beat her own school record in the high jump, jumping 4' 6". If Magerl can bottle that for Sectionals that will be a very good thing! O'Marro took second in the H.J.(4' 4") and fourth in the 400M(1:10). Anna Newell is still struggling for that state time in the 200M but managed another first for the team posting :29.6. Katie Korza added third place team points in the 200M with :31.36. Katie Jasmon ran state qualifying time in the 1600M proving she can and will double at state this season running both the 1600M and the 800M. Jasmon posted 5:52 for the 1600M placing second and 2:40 in the 800M taking first. Ashley Ralph placed second in the 800M posting 2:50. Ralph also placed second in the 100M hurdles(:19.75). A final second place finish came with the 4x100M relay team also struggling to get state time in this event. Lead by Magerl and anchored by Schraeder the relay took a disappointing second after a failed hand off between Korza and McHenry. At least they got that out of the way before Sectionals. Still, the girls ran 1:00 in the 4x100M, not too shabby! McHenry(:14.25) finished third in the 100M with Schraeder(14:35) finishing fourth. McHenry gave the team some additional help by throwing shot, not a usual event for her. She placed fourth(20'2") while Grace Gieger placed fourth in the discus(57'4"). The future is optimistic for Sectionals with such a solid 8th grade girls team! 7th & 8th Grade Boys Take Second at Washington Middle School Triangular Springfield, Illinois -- May 2002--- 7th grade Boys score 86 points and 8th grade boys score 82 points?? How is that possible with only three 8th graders present to field a team and Jeff Sanders out of town at his sister's softball tournament? Can you say, this team has depth? Yes, Yes, Yes! Once again our nine, sixth grade boys, come in to save the meet, filling in many events at the Washington Triangular on Thursday afternoon otherwise known as Val Contri's birthday. Contri ran for the 7th graders and took third in the 400M (1:14). Contri also ran the lead leg of the 4x200M relay team which finished second with a time of 2:00, just 9 seconds off state time and ahead of the 8th grade team. Trey Dhabalt, Jeff Painter and Kevin Klemm are all members of the 4x200M 7th grade team while Patrick Boyer, Matt and Ben Cummins and Tommy Lord were members of the 8th grade 4x200M relay team(2:12). Boyer did just finish the 800M run and was at a bit of a disadvantage for peak performances. Michael Stieren took an all time personal best on the long jump, leaping 15' 2" for first while settling for third in the 200M(:27.6). Those Washington boys are FAST!!! Although, David Kavish managed to squeeze in a second place finish in the 100M with his personal best :13.28. The 4x100M relay team of Kavish, Nick Langellier, Casey Sheehan, and Stieren took second with a time of :55.83. The boys would like to see state time of :53.0 The make-up for this team could be a tough call for Sectionals. Langellier took a heart wrenching third place finish on his unbeaten 110M hurdles. Langellier fell on the second to the last hurdle and still got up to take a third with a time of :20.1. Langellier was in the lead just before the fall. Langellier also took third in the 800M 2:47. Michael Enno is struggling with the weight of his new cast. Imagine running the 1600 while carrying around an additional eight pounds. That is not easy to do. Still, Enno eked out a third place finish in the 1600M posting a time of 6:11. The 4x400M relay team, Phil Sherman, Bryce Yoho, Devin Mapes and Ben Ahrens took third with a time of 5:41. Fourth place point earners for the 7th grade boys were: Phil Sherman in the discus(58'4"), Ben Cummins in the long jump(13'6"), Ben Ahrens in the 1600M(6:38) and Kavish in the 200M(:30.3). Enno took sixth in the 800M.(2:58) As for the 8th grade team, Boyer took fourth in the 110M hurdles(:19.4) Brandon Curry took second in both the shot(27' 5") and the discus(87' 3") while Chris Foster finished fourth in the shot(24' 9") and third in the discus(56' 11"). Langellier used his long jumping efforts with the 8th graders taking fourth with a leap of 13' 8". Tommy Lord ran the 100M and took fourth.(:15.37) Devin Mapes added fourth place points in the 1600M (6:40) while Sherman(1:23) and Jasmon(1:33) placed third and fourth in the 400M. Brothers Matt(:31.62) and Ben(:34.05) Cummins took second and third in the 200M. Patrick Boyer ran a most impressive 800M time of 2:52 for second in that event.
