Every Point Counts in Chatham

Chatham, Illinois – April 2002--  Grace Gieger we missed you? The Eighth Grade Girls were just a few points shy of the gold  at Thursday's Track meet against a 170 member deep Chatham Glenwood team. Gieger was out of town and we needed her usual extraordinary performances in the shot and discus. The triangular meet hosted Chatham Glenwood with 49.5 points, Turner with 36 points and BSS/SAS with 44.5 points.

Hailee Elmore gave her customary but not shy of extraordinary performance placing first in the mile(5:25), first in the 400M(1:06) and first in 4x200M relay team(2:09.4). Anna Newell, Emily McHenry, and Kimberly Magerl also gave remarkable performances on that winning 4x200 relay team. It appears to be a replay of last year’s spring season as the girls were just 12 seconds behind state time so early in the season. Does that ring a bell?

Elmore is still running the 1600 well under state qualifying time and is just one second shy of state time in the 400M. Karen Trott was 1.5 seconds off state time in the 100M hurdles giving her a first place finish at the Chatham Triangular. Trott placed second in the long jump(11’11”) and was the first leg of the 4x100M relay team, another state relay hopeful. Rebecca Schraeder, Katie Korza and Ashley Jones were also members of that 4x100M relay team (1:00.4). They were just 5.4 seconds off state time. Schraeder upped her personal best placing second in the 100M (:14.4). Is she statebound too? Time and effort will tell the tale.

Katie Jasmon  posted an impressive 2:48 in the 800M adding her second place team points to the total. Jasmon is just 10 seconds off state time in the 800M, a very attainable goal for a state veteran. Jasmon took fourth in the mile and her 4x400 relay team placed second(5:03). Maureen O’Marro, Jones, and Trott were also members of that relay team. O’Marro took third in the high jump(4’2”) and placed third in the 400M(1:15). As a second year 400M runner, O’Marro is another state hopeful in both the high jump and the 400M. Ashley Jones took fourth in the 800M(2:55).

Rounding up team points were Ashley Ralph taking fourth in the 100M hurdles (:20.5), Anna Newell taking third in the 200M(:30.47) and fourth in the 100M(:14.7), and Emily McHenry who took fourth in the 200M(:31.2).

7th Grade Girls Welcome Back Becker and Helms

Chatham, Illinois – April 2002--  If you missed the Chatham Glenwood Triangular Thursday night, you missed one of the closest 100M girl’s races you will see all year. Due to some newcomers to the stop watch,  Bridget Helms, Christine Becker and Moral from Chatham were all clocked at the same time, :14.8 in the 100M. Helms was clearly the first place winner but second was a guess and they gave the second place to Chatham and third to Becker. One for you one for me…………..?

Helms had an outstanding performance in both the 100M and the 200M(:30.0) placing first in both. Helms has serious state potential with a little more track time. Becker added more team points placing first in the high jump (4’2”). This was Becker’s first meet ever as a high jumper. Great things are expected from this young lady.   The 7th grade girls team all of five members deep was very happy to see both Becker and Helms back from break and back in the competition.

Jessica Selvaggio had an amazing performance in the discus throw (63’) adding another first place finish for the team. Breanne Sergeant was outstanding in both the long jump (11’11”) and again in the hurdles(:18.7). Sergeant is expected to go to state in the 100M hurdles.

With ONLY 5 girls making up the seventh grade team where do all those other points come from???? They come from an extremely talented group of Sixth Graders who run with the Seventh graders. Ashley Eck and Erin Malone ran with Becker and Sergeant to place second in the 4x200M relay(2:11) team.   Jessica Orlando ran with Selvaggio, Helms and Anne Bloechle placing third in the 4x100M(1:04) relay. Darian Dolenc, Anne Cumming, Orlando, and Kyle Enno, all sixth graders placed second in the 4x400 relay(5:40). The 4x100M relay was just 8 seconds off state time and the 4x200M relay team was just 10 seconds off state time. Both very attainable.

Eck and Dolenc added even more team points both placing third in the  400M(Eck) and the 800M(Dolenc) with times of 1:18 and 3:07 respectively. Anne Cumming and Anne Bloechle rounded out the team points each receiving two third place finishes, Bloechle in shot and discus and Cumming in the 100M hurdles(:23.3) and the 400M(1:20). Orlando, Eck, Cumming, Enno, Dolenc, and Malone are all state hopefuls! Sixth graders running as seventh graders, with these times???
Unheard of  :o).

Team Points fell as follows: Chatham 62, BSS/SAS 46, Turner 25.

Boys tough it out in the Bitter Cold in Chatham

Chatham, Illinois – April 2002--  No Mr. Stieren, contrary to popular belief, all track meets are not ten hours long; only when we go to Chatham and they run their entire 170 member team in each race. OK perhaps ten is an exaggeration but the Triangular in Chatham was every bit of a 6-hour ordeal for many BSS/SAS runners and their parents and to them we say, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!

Moving right along, Michael Stieren did indeed prove to be the best at the 200M against a very strong and deep Chatham and Turner team. Stieren ran :27.5, just 1.2 seconds off state time. Stieren also competed in the long jump(12’3”).  Kevin Klemm tied for second in the high jump jumping 4’0”. Klemm also placed third in the 110M hurdles(:20.7). Placing second in the 4x100M relay were David Kavish, Klemm, Casey Sheehan, and Stieren with a time of :56.89 a mere three seconds off state time. Will they make it by Sectionals??? Of course they will.

Sam Gallon ran an impressive 400M race against this extreme talent with a time of 1:11. Gallon too could go to state with a little tougher practice time. Gallon was also a member of the 4x200M relay team(2:15), another impressive time!

Other competitors at the Chatham Triangular were Tommy Lord in the high jump. Michael Enno partcipated in the long jump(11’8”), 1600M(6:34), 800M(2:50) and the 4x400M relay(5:01). Bryce YoHo ran the 110M hurdles(:24.93) and the 400M(1:24).

In addition to the 4x100M relay, Sheehan ran the 100M(:14.6) and the 200M(:31.7). Devin Mapes ran the 1600M(6:46) and the 800M(3:15). Trey Dhabalt ran the 100M(:15.9) and was a member of the 4x200M relay team. Val Contri ran the 100M(:15.0), the 400M(2:15) and was a member of the 4x200M relay team. Phil Sherman just back from a sunny spring break vacation ran the 800M(3:18) and threw the shot and discus we think :o) Jeff Painter ran the 200M(:33.9) and was a member of the 4x200M relay team.

Team totals were: Chatham 86.5, Turner 37 and BSS/SAS 14.5.

Jeff Sanders, Patrick Boyer and Brandon Curry represented the BSS/SAS eighth grade boys’ team. If you are interested in seeing how the discus and shot are done properly, you need to be paying attention to Jeff Sanders this season. Sanders, who has been throwing state distance since practice started in early March, threw the shot 41’6” and the discus 102’9”. His distance at Chatham won him first place honors in both events. Boyer took fourth in both the long jump(11’8”) and the 100M(15.6). Curry took fourth in the discus(76’8”).

Team totals were: Chatham 61, Turner 49 and BSS/SAS 13.
