Sectional Win and Statebound Again
Southeast Track Springfield, Illinois -- May 2002--- A season wrought with
inclement weather from the word go is finally rewarded with a Sectional win and
twelve athletes headed for state.
The 7th and 8th grade girls found victory at the Southeast track Sectional meet
on Monday afternoon. The 8th grade girls tied with Springfield Grant for first
place with 60 points followed by Springfield Washington with 58. The 7th grade
girls took fourth ahead of all the other area Springfield schools. Pleasant
Plains took first, Williamsville second with Petersburg taking third.
Breanne Sergent took control of the 100M hurdles in a field of 24 in the prelims
and went on to win the 100M hurdle finals by a full hurdle length in front of
the next fastest girl Katie Heffelmire from Pleasant Plains. Sergent's time
:17.32 for first landed her a trip to state. But Sergent won't go alone. Karen
Trott(:17.20) just barely missed a first place finish in the 8th grade girls
100M hurdle finals behind Emily Maskey (:17.10) of Pleasant Plains assuring
Trott a spot on the state team as well.
Bridgete Helms sprinted out in front of the pack in both the 100M dash(:13.7)
and the 200M dash(:27.7). Helms was a full second ahead of the next fastest girl
in both events. Helms guaranteed herself a spot on the state team in both the
100M dash and the 200M dash but it didn't stop there.
Hailee Elmore finished second in the 8th grade girls 400M behind Caitlin Barrett
from Springfield Grant. Elmore ran 1:02.8, nearly three seconds under state
qualifying time. Barrett ran 1:01.8. We will see both girls again at the state
finals.
Sixth grader Melissa Gay had the entire Gay family in tears when she finished
third in the 7th grade girls 800M, running a state qualifying time of exactly
2:41. BSS/SAS's first sixth grader to make it to state in an individual event
but it didn't stop there either.
Katie Jasmon finished fourth in the 8th grade girls 800M and managed to post
under state time at 2:37.27 assuring herself a spot in that state race as well.
Both Jasmon and Elmore qualified for state in the 1600M Run. Jasmon
running 5:41 and Elmore looking to break another state record posting 5:16. The
current state record for the 8th grade girls 1600M run is 5:07.
BSS/SAS is sending both 7th and 8th grade 4x200M relay teams to state on
Saturday! Helms, Sergent, Newell and Elmore ran 1:55.5 for first at the 8th
grade level at Sectionals while Hanney, Malone, Eck and Orlando ran 2:09.39 for
second and a chance at state at the 7th grade level. All girl's running on that
7th grade team are 6th graders!

a leap of 14' 1 1/2", 10-inches under her personal best jump. Sergent took
a heartbreaking third in that event with 13'111/2".
